Come, come, come again whoever you are,

An unbeliever, a fire-worshipper, come,

Our convent is not of desperation,

Even if you have broken your vows hundred times,

Come, come, come again

On December 17th, 1273 AD, a universal genius, one of the greatest servants of humanity, founder of the Mevlevi Sufi Brotherhood poet Mevlana Jalal al-din Rumi died at Konya. He was a philosopher and mystic of Islam, but not a Muslim of the orthodox type. His doctrine advocates unlimited tolerance, positive reasoning, goodness and charity, awareness through love. To him and to his disciples all religions are more or less good, as all are roads leading to the truth. Looking with the same eye on Muslim, Jew and Christian a like, his peaceful and tolerant teaching has reached men of all sects and creeds. Rumi was laid to rest beside his father and over his remains a splendid shrine was erected. The 13th century Mevlana mausoleum with its mosque, dance hall, dervish living quarters and school, and tombs of various leading adherents of the Mevlevi order continue to this day to draw pilgrims from all parts of the Muslim world as well as from the non-Muslim world

A Turkish Sufi Poet: YUNUS EMRE

A single word can brighten the face

A single word can brighten the face
of one who knows the value of words.
Ripened in silence, a single word
acquires a great energy for work.

War is cut short by a word,
and a word heals the wounds,
and there's a word that changes
poison into butter and honey.

Let a word mature inside yourself.
Withhold the unripened thought.
Come and understand the kind of word
that reduces money and riches to dust.

Know when to speak a word
and when not to speak at all.
A single word turns the universe of hell
into eight paradises.

Follow the Way. Don't be fooled
by what you already know. Be watchful.
Reflect before you speak.
A foolish mouth can brand your soul.

Yunus, say one last thing
about the power of words --
Only the word "I"
divides me from God.

Translated by Grace Martin Smith

Another poem by the great sufi Yunus Emre

To be in love...

To be in love with love is to gain a soul,
to sit on the throne of hearts.

To love the world is to be afflicted.
Later the secrets start to make sense.

Don't be a bramble,
become the rose. Let your maturity unfold.
The brambles will only burn.

Prayer was created by God so man could ask for help.
It's too bad if you haven't learned to ask.

Accept the breath of those who are mature-
let it become your divining rod.
If you obey your self, things turn out wrong.

Renouncing the world is the beginning of worship.
If you are a believer, believe this.

Respect your parents and ancestry,
and you will have fine green clothes of your own.

If you earn the complaints of neighbors,
You'll stay in Hell forever.

Yunus heard these words from the masters.
If you need this advice, take it.

They say one who is received by a heart
becomes more beautiful.

Act like the sun in love and compassion!
Act like a river in friendship and fraternity!
Act like the night in covering the faults of others!
Act like the soil in humilty and selflessness!
Act like a dead one in anger and fury!
Act in accordance with the way you look!
Look in accordance with the way you act!

God has given us a dark wine so potent that,
drinking it, we leave the two worlds.

God has put into the form of hashish a power
to deliver the taster from self-consciousness.

God has made sleep so
that it erases every thought.

God made Majnun love Layla so much that
just her dog would cause confusion in him.

There are thousands of wines
that can take over our minds.

Don't think all ecstacies
are the same!

Jesus was lost in his love for God.
His donkey was drunk with barley.

Drink from the presence of saints,
not from those other jars.

Every object, every being,
is a jar full of delight.

Be a conoisseur,
and taste with caution.

Any wine will get you high.
Judge like a king, and choose the purest,

the ones unadulterated with fear,
or some urgency about "what's needed."

Drink the wine that moves you
as a camel moves when it's been untied,

and is just ambling about.

Rumi

Everywhere I told my story,
to the sad and the happy.
Everyone came close, but only
with their own secrets, never knowing mine.
My secret is also hidden from me,
for the light shines only outward.
The body and soul are intimate friends
but the soul remains secret from us all.

U.N.E.S.C.O. has designated 2007 to be the year of The Mevlana to celebrate the 800th anniversary of his birth, 30th Sept. 1207.
For those of us lucky enough to have visited the tomb of Celaleddin Rumi in Konya,The Whirling Dervishes & The Mevlana himself need no introduction.
For anyone else, next September is definately the time to go as celebrations will be in full swing.
The Mevlana's poetry has been described as an ocean, vast & boundless. He wanted it to appeal to all people at all levels, originally written in Persian but there are many translations available now. The Whirling Dervishes are performed every December as a celebration of his death.
The Whirling Dervishes are unique, almost hypnotic to watch as the dancers lose themselves in spiritual expression. The tall hats represent their gravestones, the jackets which they shed during the dance, represent their graves. With one hand raised & the other pointing towards the ground they are taking from God & giving to man, keeping nothing for themselves.
Konya is the old Selçuk capital, the beautiful green tiled dome of The Karatay Medrese dominating the city. İf you're interested in some of the older mosques, museums & Turkish history then hit The Silk Road, lose yourselves in Turkish times gone-by. You'll love it and the memory will stay with you forever.

Mevlana said: Come out of the circle of time and into the circle of Love.

We came whirling
out of nothingness
scattering stars like dust.
The stars made a circle
and in the middle
we dance.
The wheel of heaven circles God like a mill
If you grab a spoke
it will tear your hand off.
Turning and turning
it sunders
all attachment.
Were that wheel not in love
it would cry
Enough! How long this turning?
every atom turns bewildered
Beggars circle tables
dogs circle carrion
the lover circles his own heart.
Ashamed,
I circle shame.
A ruined water wheel
whichever way I turn
is the river
If that rusty old sky
creaks to a stop
still, still I turn
And it is only God
circling Himself.

~Sifter of Dust~

Suppose you know the difinitions
of all substances and their products,
what good is this to you?
Know the true difinition of yourself.
That is essential.
Then, when you know our own difinition, flee from it,
that you may attain to the One who cannot be defined,
O sifter of the dust.

Görünüşte su, ateşten üstündür.....
Fakat ikisinin arasına bir tencere (sevgi)
girdi mi ateş o suyu kaynatır, buharlaştırır, yok eder.
Görünüşte su, nasıl ateşten üstünse, sen de kadından üstünsün;
fakat hakikatte ona mağlupsun,çünkü onu istemektesin".

At first look water is superior to fire...
But if between both of them comes a saucepan(love) the fire boils that water, vaporize it and destroy it.At first look just as water is superior to fire you are superior to the woman, but actually you are defeated by her because you want her.
