The local mayor wants to rename the spot after a historic holy man, Eyüp Sultan, instead of keeping the current name "Pierre Loti heights".
Locals's opinions are divided:
"Cevdet Şener, a 64-year-old resident of Pierre Loti Heights was angry about the proposal.“Nobody has the right to change its name. This is a historical name. That is the name it has been called so since I was a child,” he said. Changing its name would be another blemish on the AKP's Municipality.”
"A young shopkeeper, Kadir Yıldız, 20, thought the whole matter was a national issue, disagreed with Şener. “This is our place and our culture. We are a nationalist community. So the name Eyüp Sultan is more appropriate for the heights,” he said."
