According to the video mentioned above, the building was on the list for demolition - it wasn't build solid enough to survive earthquakes.

Well I guess that could apply to many other buildings still inhabited at this time. Very worrying.

From what I have heard, there was a wood oven bakery in the building next door. They think the heat from the oven compromised the framework of the builsing nextdoor. And then when they tearing down the bakery building, the building collapsed. This area is by the airport, not far from the Galleria shopping center.

I think the most frightening things is that this building was on a list to be condemned. And apparently, there is a list of over 16,000 other buildings listed to be torn down due to structural deficiency. My question is, where will the money come from to tear down these buildings? These flats are all owned. What person will agree to allow their flat to be torn down without compensation. This is a very serious problem without the financial resources to rectify.

My God how terrible! I just found out about this! will watch the evening news! I am so sorry for these people although it could have been even worse.
Now that one of you spoke about eathquakes, they really scare my to death although I live in one of the 3 most seismic countries on earth :-S and I can imagine how horrific was the one you had in 1999!
My prayers are with them as well...
