Are there any people who study as foreign student in Turkey here? I'd like to hear about experiences and about how the process was to enter the university. I'd be very thankful for all these, because im struggling to get my things about that done for next year.

Are language courses in Turkish any good? If i sign in for a year-taking course of Turkish in Turkey (Izmir), will they be good or will they teach me how to order ice-creams and tell that i won't have sex without a condom?!

I need a GOOD 1-year-taking course that brings me at a good level of speaking fluently turkish.

Thanks in advance

hehe good point to view its very nice that you know what you need.. i liked it
anyway for foreign students you are attending a classify examination for the lecturers to see your level. so that you learn turkish for one semester or two(equals one year).
its so with my İstanbul Technical University.. but Tömer teaches this shorter than universities does i guess..
take care

As far I know, TOMER prepares two types of courses: 8 months courses and holidays courses, lasting 1-3 months. To study in Turkish, on some turkish university you need to pass the exam called Yuksek II (it's a the level- High II). This is what I know. I will know more after next year holidays. I have writen a few e mails to different turkish univerities, but none gave the answer...

Learining T7urkish here, in Poland I use "Hitit" handbookspublished by the Ankara University Press. When you finish upper intermediate and advanced turkish courses in TOMER you can get a special certificate from Ankara Univeristy.
Hitit book are quite good. There are topics like divorces, food, environment contamination etc. In my opinion it is enough to learn Turkish well.

Thanks for your reply

The trouble is.. i wanna LIVE in turkey next year. And i need a LONGTERM visa for it. Only a job or a language-institute / university can give me a good reason to get a longterm visa.

The YÖS exam, specially designed for foreign students, is required for me to enter university. But i can't enter that exam because of personal affairs in holland at that day (highscoolexams are that day).

Therefore i want to enter a language-course of highquality in Turkey. (which will get me a longtermvisa and the same quality of learning turkish as the univresity would give me in turkish preparatory class)

These are my plans:

- this year: homestudy (already doin that in the little time i have)
- next year: a turkish language course in Izmir
- the year after next year: entering a turkish university.

It's so complex to get there!! And i have difficulties in making them real because i don't know how to find a good language course in izmir.

Oh and i will search for this Tomer.. hope its not a home-study!

Oh wait.. it is university... I'm trying to find some course that is not related to a university or at least, that wont ask for an entrance exam.. If that entrance exam is in summerholidays its fine.. but not before..
And it should be in Izmir

I hope im not bothering you, sounding ungrateful or annoying.. but i'm getting quite desperate :-S

This is a course offered by Ege University in İzmir.

http://bornova.ege.edu.tr/%7Etdae/togretimi.html

On this page it says accommodation will be provided within the university and 10 minutes of walking distance.
You could contact them via the contact details on that page.

All details for YÖS (Yabancı Uyruklu Öğrenci Sınavı
http://osym.gov.tr/BelgeGoster.aspx?DIL=1&BELGEBAGLANTIANAH=108

As I'm originally from İzmir I have visited Ege University many times. It has a nice big campus with a swimming pool inside.

Here is another and private university from İzmir:
http://oim.ieu.edu.tr/eng/admissions.htm
But it doesnt have a Turkish program.

Another university in İstanbul:
http://www.boun.edu.tr/announce/yos_eng.html
http://www.boun.edu.tr/announce/2005_yos_minimum_scores.htm

BTW,
you can apply for YÖS by requesting the form by post. They also do the tests abroad in some countries but not in EU or US.
http://osym.gov.tr/BelgeGoster.aspx?DIL=1&BELGEBAGLANTIANAH=113

You can take the Yös in Ankara only if you are from EU or US. You need to request the application form by post:

Quote:

Başvurmak isteyen adaylar yazılı olarak "Öğrenci Seçme ve Yerleştirme Merkezi, ÖSYM-YÖS, 06538, Ankara, TÃœRKİYE" ya da şahsen "ÖSYM-YÖS, Karyağdı Sokak, No. 28, Aşağıayrancı, Ankara, TÃœRKİYE" adresinden "Başvurma Belgesi" ile ilgili yılın "ÖSYM-YÖS Kılavuzu"nu isterler.

The request address is shown in bold. When you get the form you fill and send back untill the deadline shown in the form.

They say from November on you can ask for application form so November, December and January should be OK I think.

University charges are mentioned here:
http://osym.gov.tr/BelgeGoster.aspx?DIL=1&BELGEBAGLANTIANAH=1823
In state universities it is 850-1750 USD/year in private universities: 9000-20000 USD.

For Turks the State universities are almost for free.
