The Crescent and the Star by Stephen Kinzer. Has anybody bought this book and what do you think of it? I remember it had very good reviews in Dutch papers last year (it was reprinted I believe), and I would like tohear your opinions.
As İm not having too much money to spend, I want to make 'sure' for as far as I can be, that Im buying a usefull book that will enlarge (or actually start to form) my knowledge about Turkish history but also about nowadays modern Turkey that is trying to become a more 'western' country without losing its eastern beauties.
Any answer is welcome, Please share your ideas with me otherwise İ will by some nice poetry from Nazım Hikmet

Thanks Elisa, that sure was helpful and you also brought my interest to the books mentioned about Atatürk!
Ive always loved the ancient greek history but that is where my passion for history stopped. Now I am reading Birds without Wings, I realised that I read the parts about history with much pleasure and not that much difficulty (in highschool i always had to read everything twice that was about war) anymore so I really should find a good book! History will be important if İ get to study Türk dili ve Edebiyatı.

I looked Stephen Kinzer up and he seems to have pretty good recommendations. He also wrote "All the Shah's Men"
FYI it's on Amazon for $4.94 used.

Yes, I wondered that too. Can somebody tell me about ordering from Amazon? Ive never done that before. What are the shipping costs usually for 1 or 2 books? And the shipping time? Is is trustworthy? Has anybody from Turkey ordered from Amazon.com ? Are payments done by visa?

Generally, ordering and shipping from Amazon is pretty simple and safe. There are some shipping rates which are changable for the locations. Shipping time is about one week for Turkey but you can make it fast by selecting fast shipping -of course more expensive  -.
Btw, if your order is broken when you recieved it, they change it with the new one or return your money.
They accept all major credit cards, as well as amex, diners etc.

Let me tell you:
First you get an account by submitting your e-mail address, then follow the instructions, falan filan...

It depends on the method of shipping. There are three types of shipping method: normal, expedited and... (I forgot the name of the third one. I think you'd better forget about it. After all you would never prefer it like I did. )
But as far as I know Amazon charges shipping cost for each item, no matter what they might be. This means that if you order two items, you are charged two times for shipping cost.

The normal shipping to Turkey, usually takes 4-6 weeks, depending on the availability of the item you order, of course. And the expedited method, 2-3 weeks.

The only frustrating thing with ordering from amazon.com is that the shipping cost sometimes exceeds the price of the item you consider to order. E.g. The price be only $6, and the shipping cost would be about $12. Hehehe! There are many cheap books that I want to order from amazon, but principely I can't accept to pay much more for the shipping than for the book price itself.

Hehe thank you Panta Rei. Well if it takes over a month I might as well spend my time looking around some more bookshops in İzmir, they might as well have it!
I also dont have that much money to spend (and a second hand book, there are people who read their books on the toilet only so no thanks) and I dont know my summer plans yet so..in that case I might as well buy in Holland too

Did I prepare and post my such a perfectly and wonderfully written reply just for this? For the simple conclusion that you "might as well buy in Holland too"? Did I put all my effort for just this, huh? So, is that easy that much-"you don't know your summer plans yet"?

Always make sure to state that your order is a gift. In that case, customs won't charge taxes when they do a check. They're shipping to another continent after all, so you might have to pay taxes.
I had bad luck once, didn't check the gift-box. When my cd arrived, I paid more than twice the normal price for it because of the custom taxes 
I noticed that even when adding the shipping costs, books and cd's may be cheaper at Amazon than when you buy them from a shop. So it's always worth comparing.

That's not entirely true Pantacım. There's a cost per item indeed, and a general shipping cost, which is charged only once, no matter how many items you buy. Which means it's more advantageous to order a lot at the same time.

Hmmm... If only I didn't find out that!... If only I continued to live without knowing this actual and sad fact!... Now I deeply regret not having ordered more than one item at the same time and hence paid much less!
