COLOR NOUNS, ADJECTIVES IN TURKISH

(1) Colors in turkish:

Color Renk
Black Siyah (‘Kara’ also possible as adjective)
White Beyaz (‘Ak’ also possible as adjective)
Red Kırmızı (‘Al’ and ‘Kızıl’ also possible as adjective)
Blue Mavi
Orange Turuncu
Green Yeşil
Purple Mor
Pink Pembe
Brown Kahverengi
Yellow Sarı
Grey Gri

=> Beyaz saçlı adam = Ak saçlı adam (White haired man)
=> Kırmızı bayrak = Kızıl bayrak = Al bayrak (Red flag)
=> Siyah gece = kara gece (Black night)
=> Sarı araba (Yellow car)
=> Kahverengi elbise (Brown dress)

(2) Uçuk (Very Light) ---> Açık (Light) ---> Koyu (Dark)

=> Uçuk mavi (very light blue)
=> Açık mavi (Light Blue)
=> Koyu mavi (Dark blue)

(3) There are also many special color names in turkish, such as:

Havai mavi (Color of the clear sky)
Gülkurusu (Color that a pink rose turns into when it fades)
Gülpembe
Kavuniçi
Yavruağzı
Çingene pembesi
……..

=> Gülkurusu yüz (yüz = face)
=> Gülpembe ten (ten = skin)

(4) If you add -mtrak suffix to a color, this means ‘color is like’ but ‘you are not sure’…
You can specify all the colors in that way.

Mavi + mtrak = Mavimtrak (This color is like ‘Mavi’ )
Mor + u + mtrak = Morumtrak ( This color is like ‘mor’)
Sarı + ı +mtrak = Sarımtrak
Kavuniçi + mtrak = Kavuniçimtrak

(5) If you use ‘cart’ or ‘cırtlak’ as adjective for colors, this usually means ‘color disturbs you mostly due to its brightness’.

=> Cart mavi = Cırtlak mavi (A bright blue that distrubs your eyes)
=> Cart (cırtlak) renkli elbise (Can you guess the meaning???)

(6) If you want especially to underline the color, you use:

Siyah -> simsiyah (literally means ‘very black’ or ‘completely black’)
Kara -> kapkara (literally means ‘very black’ or ‘completely black’)
Beyaz -> bembeyaz (literally means ‘very white’ or ‘completely white’)
Kırmızı -> kıpkırmızı (literally means ‘very red’ or ‘completely red’)
Mavi -> masmavi (literally means ‘very blue’ or ‘completely blue’)
Yeşil -> yemyeşil (literally means ‘very green’ or ‘completely green’)
Mor -> mosmor (literally means ‘very purple’ or ‘completely purple’)
Pembe -> pespembe (literally means ‘very pink’ or ‘completely pink’)
Sarı -> sapsarı (literally means ‘very yellow’ or ‘completely yellow’)
=> Ahmet o kadar sinirlendi ki, yüzü kıpkırmızı kesildi. (Ahmet is so angry that the color of his face completely turned to red)

(7) The other adjectives that can be used for the colors

Canlı (Vivid) <> Ölü (Not vivid)
Parlak (Bright) <> Soluk (Pale)

=> (Ben) Resimde canlı renkleri severim. (I like vivid colors in painting)
=> Ayşe parlak mavi bir elbise satın aldı. (Ayşe bought a bright blue dress)

'sarımtrak yeşil' (yellowish green)

=> Ayşe kırmızımtrak turuncu bir elbise satın aldı.
Ayşe bought a reddish-orange dress.

=> Ayşe mavili yeşilli bir elbise aldı.
or
=> Ayşe mavi ve yeşil bir elbise aldı.
Ayşe bought a blue and green dress. (There are two colors on the dress, blue and green)
