A forum for suggestions about the web site was offered by both weber and bod. I think it is better to have this as a sticky thread instead of a separate forum. All suggestions and ideas for improving the site are welcome. Even if the changes are not implemented immediately, they will be recorded here in this thread for reference when necessary.

1-Organizing Contents: Now that there are a considerable number of posts, lots of stuff need to be organized in the “Turkish Language Forum Section”. A thread to discuss how best to organize it can be started and a list of updateable tasks can be distributed to volunteers to put all these grammar and translation posts in two conclusive pages.

2-Tasks & volunteers: Many members seem to be willing to contribute to the site one way or another. A list of ongoing tasks can be prepared and posted in a dedicated thread. Volunteers can pick tasks best suited for them.

3-Personal Detailes: Checking each other’s personal profiles is a continuous task undertaken by all members. It would be very helpful if when the cursor is placed over a member’s name a floating window containing the details of that member is displayed. (sample-1)

4- NEWS FORUMS: Two daily news forums (Turkish news, International news) can be introduced for members to add Headlines with links to the original items. No need to include the articles themselves unless access to the news is not a straight forwards process. This will help to bring local news of different countries on one page.

5- spaces for lists: When trying to make a list in a posting or modifying a message window, puttinig any number of spaces between two words or two letters always returns as one space. Spaces are being ignored. The list ends up like this:
one =bir
hello = Merhaba
nasilsin = How are you
iyiyim = fine
ne haber = what is happening
It would be nicer if we can control the space so that the beginning of the second coloumn is aligned. Something like this

one =.........bir
hello =.......Merhaba
nasilsin =...How are you
iyiyim =......fine
ne haber =.what is happening.

6- Clock: on the main header or between "user statistics" and "new in forums". Members can see when messages were posted but they can not tell what the time is because their computers dispaly their local time. A clock related to the posting time would be hrlpful.
(Sample-2)

7- Forum Latest Messages: Now that there is more traffic and posts, increasing the number of latest messages from 25 to 100 could be appreciated more by users, I would.

I assume this means you would like suggestions for changes/improvements........I have a huge list of (mostly minor) changes that would make the site far easier to use - but I list just two below for the moment.

Make the dictionary open in one window
Currently, double clicking a word opens that word in another window. Double clicking another word opens yet another window. Before long a user (well, this user!) has many many windows open Can we please arrange that double clicking a word opens a new window the first time but the next time it re-uses the already open dictionary window? If users want massive numbers of dictionary windows they can always Shift+DoubleClick to force a new window!
I can tell you how to do this if you don't already know!

Load the last thread page after update
Currently, when you add a new post to a thread, the start of the thread is displayed. So to check on your post you need to click the ">" link so you can check your post is correctly formatted. Can we have the display go to the last page of the thread in the same way as happens when you modify a post that you previously made?

Please - a very minor change that would make the site lots more functional.......change the tabbing order so that pressing tab from the message box takes you straight to the Send button and not the Add Link button.

Yeah - I have been meaning to suggest this for ages!!!

Seems the whole site has been written without thought for people who prefer to use the mouse (or other pointing device) as little as they can - changing a few tab orders would help lots!

At least they are making a start of it
I really like to see how this website is growing and becoming more helpfully, especially if you see it are mainly the frequent users (who have most right of speaking i guess), are offerring their help

I'd like to take one of those tasks to contribute a bit, because i cannot help with turkish language and i dont wanan feel totally useless because i get great help here.

I think so too As most people receive mails and sms from (mostly) guys in Türkiye, I'm sure they are all familiar with that time-zone

I agree about the lay-out. It shouldn't become too complicated bec it will distract (i vote for simple but design), but this grey looks kinda unprofessional if i may say so. With paintshop for example, you could make a beautiful background-lay-out with pictures from turkiye or the turkish flag or something

Well, time for me to add my comments.
In the first place, lets remember that this site is not that old and the improvements made since I joined about one year ago are too many to comment on. Personally I like the 'grey' fomat. It may not look as 'chi chi' as some of the other sites, but to my mind it is 'comfortable' and friendly. Nothing assaulting your eyes.

My only suggestions at the moment for a small improvement is that since the arrival of the new dictionary, you can't copy and past your word out of it because the whole page highlights.

I also actually think that the 'My Turkish Boyfriend/Girlfriend' forum should be reinstated. The point being is that so many people are on this site because of their bf's and gf's, that the discussions were, I believe, highly educational. Reading about other people's experiences, if you can relate to them, is a perfect way of understanding Turkish culture and mentality. People still discuss their bf's and gf's anyway, they just do it in other forums which detracts from the point of the forum. I know this is a 'language' class, but every language programme must include cultural lessons also and the bf/gf forums were a rich source of cultural education and understanding.

I like it too like this. Most of the time there is a lot of truth in the expression "Less is more"..

Also, when you double-click on a word with turkish characters here, those characters disappear when the word is shown in the dictionary..

Is there a chance we could have a different poetry and literature forum topic, seperated from the turkish one? And maybe a moderator could move the foreign literature and the personal attempts to write poetry there?
One could be strictly informational, and the other more like the general/off topic forum, where whoever wishes to, could present his writtings.
If I m not mistaken, the tittle of the existing one is Discussions on Turkish poetry and literature

This mess that now appears as soon as you open the poetry and literature forum, I don't think that is what we were dreaming of, when we were asking 'our' cultural forums back.
So maybe a new forum topic like 'Discussions on our members' poetry and literature' is essential?

No, it is definitely not what we were dreaming about: we wanted those forums as the place for discussions and improving our knowledge on Turkish poetry and literature as a part of Turkish culture generally, for introducing members to Turkish poets and writers and their work, for practicing Turkish, reading works of famous or less famous Turkish authors, we wanted those forums informational and educational , not personal .
Maybe, for the beginning, moderators could help, moving topics which don’t fit into this category to other categories. Of course, if they have the same idea of Poetry and Literature Forums.

Quoting sophie:

Great idea, Sophie Or maybe we could open a whole new category: „Discussions on our members’ personal matters“ – there are so many members wanting to share their personal life with others and in the same time many members willing to discuss other people’s personal life. So they could do this at special Forums, not boring others who are not interested in such activities.

I know some people here feel so much at home here that they bravely publish their own pieces of writing. Much as I am impressed by their courage and enthusiasm, I would rather see POETRY and LITERATURE when I check out the POETRY and LITERATURE category. It is a great idea Sophie to create a new place on TC where they could share their writing with others who would surely provide them with lots of friendly encouragement

This problem is now corrected by admin. I think the double click dictionary works perfect now.

Please report any further problem you have with the dictionary as we are considering some more updates.

I was reading this thread again from the beginning and even though we were late and we didn't comply with all request, we did so with some of them. Cultural forums are back and the dictionary works again. Hopefully the buttons will be added to modify message and personal message pages as well.

Please give us more feedback. We are listenin to you.

Thank you for all the suggestions and comments. We are currently working on TurkishDictionary.net and will get to the problems listed here as soon as dictionary is in a stable form. Time never seems enough. After a long time, major changes are in the horizon to gear the site towards a more Turkish language-oriented form.

And Canli, I was thinking that the dictionary will have a different-independent user profile that will let users to add words and meanings. But I should think again, integrating with TurkishClass user profiles also makes sense. It would be great if we can list pros and cons of both approaches so that we can pick one.

My picks:
Benefits of separate user lists:
-> Easier to implement, meaning less annoying bugs to deal with.
-> Two websites can be easily deployed on different servers when necessary. (This is important)
-> Some users might not want to be automatically added as a member to dictionary, taking consent is always a good idea.
-> Having "real" users with e-mail addresses is important and this is how membership started on the dictionary, e-mail verification is required. There are many dummy user accounts in TurkishClass. (E-mail verification will be added there as well)

Benefits of integrating the two:
-> Users won't have to create separate accounts.
-> There will be many users to start with.
-> TurkishClass users are already using the dictionary, and there is currently a degree of integration of two sites, so it might be intuitive to use TurkishClass accounts for the dictionary.

At this point, I am more tempted to having separate user pools for the two sites, but I am definitely interested in what others think.

Welcome back first
Cann't wait to hear all about the trip, and see the pictures, and hoping for videos as well ,,lol
Nope, not greedy really, but cann't wait to see Türkiye

İ see your point here about the dictionary, and if it will be seperated then we can have the same profile that we are having at TC,at the dictionary as well
So it won't take more than 1 min from us to creat the account and that won't be a problem
Specially if this will be better technically,i guess none of us will mind that
And it would be easy to have the benefits of integrating the two even when they are sperated

There still will be many users to start with as well, many of TC users won't mind registering for the dictionary, specially cause they already using it

İ for example prefer to open a page for the dictionary all the times, even while i am at TC

And it is really a great idea to have a user profile,if it is going to allow us to save the words, and expressions that we feel we need them handy all the time

And i have a suggestion to make here,or couples,,lol
İf i may ,

why don't we have independent sections ?

Like section for the most common expressions Türkler use in daily life ,like Merhaba, nasılsın,tşk,ne haber ne yok ?
things like that

Another section for common words, like peki ,ay,and there is something i don't remember it,i say it at chat room here between Türkler, maybe woh,or something like that
Things we cann't search it at dictionary, because you can only know it if you been there,or between Türkler,we can have this here at the dictionary too

Another section for proverbs,we here in my country used it at our daily speaking too,so as Türkler
So why don't we have a section like that for the most common proverbs which frequently used in daily life ?

İt would be great, and unique for the site, and something not provided by other similar sites all in one place

The Dictionary users would feel a Türk caddeler were brought infront of them just in one site
With the all common words, and expresions that can be held between Türkler themselves

And when they travel there, they would understand more what has the dictionary provide them

Well,it is just some ideas,i don't know if it can brought up to life or not, it is not easy i know,

But would be really unique to have this Türkçede 'or Türk?'sözlük,as it is in big English dictionaries like ,Oxford ,Longman, and so

Wish you all the best, and lots of luck ,you all earned them

Great job Çok Tşk

One thing I am not totally sure about is why the dictionary needs user accounts......surely it is a reference rather than a interactive site in the way these forums are interactive.

What can I do as a registered user of the dictionary that I can't do just by visiting it?

But - having it always open in the same window is a huge move forwards.......thank you for that

But maybe a 'real' button would be more clear..

One thing I am not totally sure about is why the dictionary needs user accounts......surely it is a reference rather than a interactive site in the way these forums are interactive.

What can I do as a registered user of the dictionary that I can't do just by visiting it?

Registered users will be able to add words and meanings, hopefully when I finish preparing the interface. And I am planning some extra features for registered users only, like listening to sound files for looked up words.

But I have to finish my thesis and graduate first, I can only do simple steps in the meanwhile

It might be annoying to have no response to suggestions on this topic and other parts of the site. But it is great that these are being recorded and I will have a lot of work to do when I get my hands on it.

Is it possible to see the last message posted when I click on a thread? Usually when I click on a thread, I would like to see the last message in that thread. Now what happens when you click on a lengthy thread is you get the first page then you click on the last page. So the first page is skipped without reading it (in most of the cases I believe). This is unnecessary usage of the bandwidth both for the client and the server. Any remedy?

Tick boxes in the PM section, so that you can select the ones you want to have deleted and delete them in one go, instead of having to do them one by one..

Moderators have a 'delete' option for every post in a thread......can normal users have the same option but for just the posts they have made? That way all users could delete their posts if they posted twice by accident or want to remove their post for any other reason.

How about collecting all the grammatical materials in the language section, and sort it under different topics at the Learn Turkish section, and arranging it so some how it can add more advanced grammar to this section ?

İt is hard job i know, especially that you would need to check the information if it is right or not,but i believe there are many people here who would like to help...

Hoping that we would get off their backs and ask less questions..lol

İt would be wonderful really.

Merhaba, I seem to be having problems with my "notepad"... every time I try to open it up, it says "Insufficient authorization for Yalınayak:1". Also, I downloaded a pic in the "personal pictures", but when I click the main pic, it doesn't go to my own pics, it goes back to "See all personal pictures". But other than that, I think this site is excellent and I'm learning alot already... tesekkür ederim!

Just two things:

1) Why is it when I post a poem (that isn't in turkish) in the "off topics" forum it is moved into the "turkish poetry and literature" forum?...people have quite CLEARLY stated that it isn't turkish and is posted in the wrong forum....just a quick message to those people: I PUT IT IN THE "GENERAL/OFF TOPIC" FORUM!!!

2) It would be alot easier if you could just copy and paste a picture into a thread like you are able to do with word documents.

Selam Yalinayak! English nicks would probably solve the problem, but I wanted to keep my Turkish. After all, this is a Turkish site . I was hoping that maybe Fatih could fix the problem and save me the trouble of re-registering.

Ok i got the meaning of what you mean but why not call him by his name? when replying to a PM he signs it as Fatih so I don't see why it is a problem. I agree it's a great name so should be proud of it If he wishes not to call him that then he can say and I would be happy to call him Admin if he wishes.

İ have a suggestion considering the dictionary.

Why don't we have the word pronunciation written beside the word ?
As like those words in the English dictionary,

Examples:

other ' údhu(r)
overlook [n] 'owvur`lûk coast kowst
overlook [v] `owvur'lûk deny di'nI

You must be very popular on TC. If you have been deleting them for about half an hour and you are still on the ones dated 23rd Feb, you must have deleted at least 400-500 messages. (It takes you about 3-5 seconds to delete one message). 400-500 messages in four day's time! You are really very popular on here.(I guess most of them aren't spam messages)You must have many fans. At least I know one.

Silly grrrrr! Your English is good enough to be sarcastic Mr. Q lol

Well for a start I am at work and the local authority server is very slow - it takes quite a long time to delete a PM and return to the screen!! Second... I tend to use PMs instead of emails here to talk to friends.

İt would be nice if when you start a forum topic you become the moderator of this topic.
I started a topic and some people made very good and relevant replies. But others where not relevant and, worse, not a word of turkish in them. Then some people started to use the forum topic for personal and boring chat messages.
All the time the quotes become longer and it takes forever to go through the topic and find some turkish.
I want to be able to clean it up so that it is interesting for people who study turkish.

But Atrila, in that case you open the road for ALL the forums of this website to be censured by whomever wants to delete whatever is or is not relevant for a thread.

I think its not a good idea, since there will be just as much people who would abuse this possibility.

Dear Astrila. Please accept my apologies for my dull and boring chat messages in your thread about dogs.

What a dull life it would be without the occasional joke. However, I agree that such posts, even dull and boring ones, should be kept to the Off Topic wherever possible, and I normally try to do that.

However, I am more than happy to remove my posts immediately and perhaps the other "dull and boring" posters will do the same.

Do you mean all forum posts beside the langugage posts to be posted at least in some Turkish? That will be difficult for beginners. Will you be satified in just finding the tesekkurler, hosgeldin, iyi geceler, etc...words only?

I dont think so Ninja - just the Language Forum. The official language of the other forum is English, but simple Turkish can be used (as you suggest).

Well I agree, and we DO try to stay out of those threads, but sometimes funny conversations do arise from the subject matter!

If we had such strict rules we would have all missed out on Eddie's amazingly funny posts on the translation forum the other day. Frankly I wouldn't have missed them for the world!!! lol

As we are talking in here, then i have a suggestion about the Dictionary admin,we can consider it related to TC as well.
Well, adding voice files to the dictionary was a great idea,so can we expand in it and we make it read whatever Turkish word we want ?
İ mean like 'Talk İT' program,it can pronounce whatever you write.
So when we have some difficulties in pronouncing the word after adding the suffix,we can use it there.
Can we do it ?

Would it be possible to have threads set up for printing (the way some of the classes are, where you can go to print view and have a nice printout of the class)? I think it would be helpful, some threads are great and very informational, especially in the language/translation forums and it would be nice if you could print them up in a nice format - and maybe even edit them before printing to remove the "extra"stuff and keep the things that one´s interested in learning.

Thanks.

Keeping the page width constant makes it technically simpler to work on the site. I think we will be keeping the width constant to not overcomplicate the page design of all the different sections we have. At least until there is a full-time design person working on the site We don´t use a layout that is too wide to be compatible with the most common screen resolutions used today.

How about an ´option´, to the owner/starter of a thread/comment, to edit the title of the thread (e.g. typos) and to delete the thread or comment ( e.g. a comment to a picture, profil, etc.), if need be and/or if they chance their mind later?

Comments can be edited, can´t they? Title should also be editable. I am not sure about deletion by users though.

I don´t think it should be possible for users to delete their threads. Just think that somebody who gets bored/gets their thread develop not the way they want, gets offended and deletes the whole thread together with everything other users posted. Not fair at all

You are right here. I missed this point. But what if no other posts by other users involved in a thread? An ideal solution would be: a user should be able to delete their posts (even if they are quoted by other users) and in case the thread includes only post(s) by the same user, their whole thread as well. This may technically not be simple this much, though, I know.

So,

* Thread titles should be able to edited by the starter

* Users should be able to delete their posts

While on the right thread, I must mention something that I find frustrating - that while you give one-line-space during writing or editing a text, it appears as two-line-space after you post it.

This

I agree users should be able to modify thread titles. As for deleting posts, you´re free to modify them and delete their content. True, if somebody quotes you then you have a problem - you can either ask the person to modify their post or simply get over it

Actually it´s one of the most liberal forums I use, in terms of users´ freedom to modify their post. Usually after an hour from posting, you lose the right to delete it. It makes sense as reading old threads with every other post deleted is just difficult. People should take responsibility for what they post

"Delete your account"- This option users must definetely have, together with a confirmation e-mail or pop-up window. Beside, there would be no need to request to be deleted.

I don´t get the point of this new like/ dislike button for forum posts. What happens if people dislike ? it is deleted or something ?

EDIT : just realised the option is not to say dislike. Only like, then can hit it to unlike to take back to nothing not actually show dislike.

If this functionality feels pointless/ridiculous/silly you can simply choose to not use it. It may be useful for judging the quality of translations or language-related posts. It may also be helpful for noticing more thoughtful posts among the rest.

If someone says something negative like "some people round here cause problems" and you say "do you mean me?" you are likely to get the answer "if the cap fits wear it". This means "I am not going to mention any names, I do not need to give any names, but as you know how you have behaved you will realise that it applies to you, or that it doesn´t apply to you".

Now it is clear that you mis-interpreted the saying in question. I didn´t ask ´Do you mean me?´. But if had asked this, yes, you are right, I would have recived the answer: ´Yarasi olan gocunur´. Thus,

if the caps fits wear it = Yarasi olan gocunur.

When somebody asks you

- Is it me you´re talking about?

Yarası olan gocunur means

- Why do you think it´s you who I´m talking about? That makes me think it should indeed be you since you think so.

Returning to suggestions... I think it would be useful if page displaying list of user´s post (the one which can be accessed from the user profile) contained information about number of replies for every post (by reply I mean every post added later to thread). Actually, number would not be required, just information if there are any replies or not for every post would be helpful in my opinion - for example, when posting few translation attempts, it would take less time for a user to see if someone else commented on his/her translation or if another translation was posted in the same thread.

To Admins: How easy/difficult would it be to put Turkish letter characters in the live chat room, near the text field? They are on the pages to start or reply to a topic so couldn´t you add those to the chat room also?

Another suggestion:

This suggestion may be purely esthetical, but is it possible to change the mechanics of the widget "New In Forums" so the links to take you to the last page of the topic, where the new post is, instead of to the first pag?

So because this is purely for what i think would be quicker navigation, its really a judgement call on the admins. Just my thoughts.
