Hi Deli Kizin,
I am actually a "young Europian girl", and had also spent some time in Diyarbakir. All in all, I have to say there is nothing you should be affraid of. The eyes on you ... sure, to be honest it was not different in Istanbul or Ankara either. What is more, in Istanbul they usally like express their opinion in words too. You know what I mean. In Diyarbakir, as far as I am concerned they keep the distance, which I liked much more. There are certain times of the year when the city is likely to be a mess. eg. bayram, newroz. Avoid these periods. If you have some local friends who are willing to take you a tour, you will have a fabulous holiday. Don't miss Hasankeyf!

surely things have changed for Diyarbakir in those 10 years... and really nice thoughts of "yabanci09" mentioned and i cant hold myself to agree to her also the same for "ceviz" ...i cant forget that dinner i had with my family in that restaurant before our way back to Istanbul in Diyarbakir hasankeyf is supposed to be underwater now becoz of that dam discussion i am not sure if they are still discussing or they did it..
for sure Diyarbakir is another city like the other cities Van, Urfa, Trabzon, Doğubeyazıt should be visited..

No, Hasankeyf still can be saved as far as I know, they keep on discussing it ... on and on and on .... in December it still seemed to be OK. Gush. But I would say, don't hesitate too much ... visit the ruins NOW. Because really nobody knows what the future holds.

Its very nice to see that somebody has actually awknowledged a place in Turkey that isnt a holiday resort! It makes a very nice change.

If I had my way, then when we return to Turkey we will completely avoid anywhere remotely touristy - but my girlfriend is more imto visiting tourist areas and relaxing. I would rather discover the real, everyday traditions and lifestyle of the country - one day I shall hopefully but our next visit will be 2 weeks in the tourist area of Turunç :-S

There was a "Çiftlik lokantası" in Ofis, near the post office. Is it still there? There was a place called selim amcanın sofra salonu and a few lahmacun shops on the corner (Ofis Köşesi) where you turn from Ofis to Şehitlik.

Eğer Çiftlik Lokantası hala duruyorsa orada yemek yerken lavaş ekmeği isteyin. Bu ince ekmeklerle küçük dürümler yaparak çatal kullanmadan yemek orada gelenekseldir. Keyifli de oluyor aslında.

Thank you for all the responses. I didn't know so many people also really have lived there. When i saw the pictures in the magazines, i must say i indeed was shocked a little. It's hard for me to understand he comes from such a place. His childhood has been SO extremely different from mine. But i like to learn about it And about all the places as well

does Kadir's father works in army or police station?

No he doesn't I think he is a civil engineer. Why do you ask?

Hehe yeah well i just think that learning the country and his inhabitants is part of learning the language. Plus, if i want to live in Turkey, i think i should have the knowledge of the country itself a bit too.

Does someone maybe have the recipe for 'Bismil pot'? It is from the oven, with baked tomatoes, peppers, garlic and above this lamb-kebap, with over that red peppers.

Quoting SuiGeneris:

and at least the nonsense Kurt-Turk thing...

Wow This really made me smile. We are all people, aren't we. Some of them should just learn to become human

Yeah i read about this. As Ceviz says, i should go to see those as soon as possible.

Quoting yabanci09:

Ive heard alot of people say they have a love/hate relationship with the city, in my opinion the contradictiveness of the city is its main appeal.

Yeah, in my mainpost i mentioned this contradictiveness too. I think that's why i am attracted to it so much too.

Thanks for all the replies, keep on posting tho

Maybe his dad worked there I don't know. But they are Kurdish.. so it's not so surprising he grew up there. I know his mum worked there as a teacher for the poor children. I hope to meet his parents soon
