Non-touristy places to visit
|

In a little over 6 months time we shall be returning to Türkiye for 2 weeks staying in Turunç (not far from Içmeler). Last time we were there, we drove the whole length of the Datça penninsular right the way to Cnıdos - we also drive around most of the Bozburun penninsular (well, as much of it as we could find roads!!!)
I really liked Datça as a place to visit, especially as it seemed to be quite away from the tourist areas. Can anyone suggest anywhere else worth going that is non-touristy??? I was thinking of going to Muğla - is there anything there to make it worth visiting???

Quoting Umran: Try Bortubed in Marmaris. |
When I went to Marmaris last year I could find nothing very interesting (except cheap Efes ) and it was totally touristy.......exactly what I do not want!!!
Not to say we won't return to Marmaris as it is accessible by both water taxi and dolmus - but we won't be visiting there while we have a hire car. Instead we want to find places where tourists do not go........
So - and suggestions???

A lot:
Hatay - visit St Peters church (St Pier Kilisesi), the bazar, the beautiful and overwhelming Antakya Archeology Museum and Harbye (8 km south of it) for it's valley;
Urfa - birth cave of Abraham (Ibrahim), very religious city, so dress properly, men and women;
Mardin - beautiful city build to a mountain, famous for its silver shops and a stunning monastery Deyrul Zafaran at about 15 km.;
Doğubayazit - beautiful castle (Ishak Paşa Sarayi), the Ark of Noah (??) and a very relaxing hot spring in Diyadin (50 km west);
Barhal - in the Kackar Mountains, stunning views, almost completely isolated (only 1 dolmus a day), nice walks, mountaineering, nice church, very friendly people;
Elazig - the most beautiful mosque I have ever seen (and I saw quite a lot) the Saray Camii;
Erzincan - the falls of Girlevik (15 km south by dolmus)
Batman - visit Hasankeyf as long as you can, they started already with the dam so in a few years there are no gorgeous sites but only water, eat fresh fish at a eatery in the middle of the Tigris (you have to walk through the Tigris to get there, with some 'bad' luck, you will be in the water almost till your hips);
Kars - visit Ani, the former capital of Armenia, now complete a ruin but still interesting and breathtaking to see.
Muradiye - water falls between Van and Dogubayazit.
There are more places like Trabzon and Van which are good to go to, but more touristic though not as touristic as you see in Alanya, Marmaris etcetera.

Try go into every bay in the Datca. As you said Knidos and center is the main attractive places for Datca peninsula but for example I recommedent you to go into Bordubet Bay and stay in Amazon Camping if you will have time. You should definetly stay at Inbuku Bay/Camping as well . You can find some photographs and places in Datca peninsula at:
http://e-turkey.net/v/mugla_datca/http://e-turkey.net/v/mugla_datca/
I am the photographer for the album and you can ask details to me if you need. My suggestion is if you want to visit no touristic places in Datca peninsula cover all the roads in Peninsula. For me it was worth to do that .

Quoting Umran: Try Bortubed in Marmaris. |
Yes, you should really google for Börtübet / Bördübet (the spelling tends to vary, I can't remember the right one anymore.. The name of the place is said to be a corruption of the name "Birdsbed", that surveyers gave to the place in the past because they were so impressed by the variety of local birdlife..) It's a fabulous place. Coves, woods, rocks.. It's simply beautiful.
On the other hand, since you've almost covered the whole area, you might want to go to a different region.. And I haven't seen enough of Turkey yet to help you with that..

Try Köceğiz it is 1/2 hr from Dalaman on the way to Marmaris.
I am biased because I live here but it is sat on a picturesque lake. If you do a search on google etc you will get plenty of information.
A turkish pizza (Pide) is 2YTL and Effes is also 2ytl and you do not have to worry about one price for Turks and one for tourists.
Me and my wife go out for a meal and drinks and spend 10 YTL including drinks. Thats £3 = £1.50 each.
It is as friendly a place as you are ever likely you find.

Quoting susie k: Its worth going to ölüdeniz just to see the blue lagoon! |
I agree ölüdeniz is a fantastic place. People are very nice and polite. Not much culture though i have to say. But the dulmus is cheap and you are near Hisaronu, which is also great for night life
Dalyan is also a great place for experiences (i.e. mud baths) there is also Turtle Beach in Dalyan which is supposedly the third most beautiful beach in the world, though i liked Akdeniz Beach (in ölüdeniz) better.
Though i may be very biased too .

I know lots of great places that are not touristy. But if I shared them here, then they would become touristy.
