CARNAGE IN DIYARBAKIR; 5 KILLED, 68 WOUNDED BY CAR BOMB – A car bomb targeting military personnel killed five people and wounded 68 others Thursday in the southeastern city of Diyarbakır, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and local officials said. The injured included students who were leaving a nearby school at the time of the blast. Erdoğan condemned the heinous terrorist attack. He vowed that Turkey’s struggle against terrorism will continue with determination. Authorities blamed the blast on separatist Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK). The pro-PKK Fırat news agency reported that PKK leaders in Iraq earlier declared big cities in Turkey targets for members of the terrorist gang living in the country.

Four killed, dozens injured in Diyarbakır explosion
An explosion occurred in the centre of the southeast city of Diyarbakır in the very second a military vehicle was driving by on Thursday, wounding at least 52 people including military personnel and killing at least four, news reports said.

The explosion occurred in a parking lot between the central five Dedeman Hotel and the Galleria Shopping at 16.55. A military vehicle carrying personnel was driving by the street in front of the parking lot at the time of explosion, witnesses said.

“There are 52 injured and four dead,” announced Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in his initial statement on the shooting. He said six were in critical condition.

All four killed may have been children, Anatolia news agency suggested. The injured were immediately hospitalized. Some of the wounded were students studying at an extra-curricular university examination course center nearby.

None of the injured taken to the hospital had died as of early evening, according to doctors at the Diyarbakır State Hospital, but confirmed some were in critical condition. According to the regional chamber of doctors, there were seventy injured.

The reason of the explosion was not known immediately, but initial reports suggested it must have been a bomb. The street is on the usual route of military vehicles, reports from the region said.

A large number of fire trucks and ambulances were sent to the area immediately after the explosion. Fire fighters on the scene were trying to put out the flames caused by the explosion. There were also minor explosions going on within the flames as fire teams battled to put them out. At least 6 automobiles and a passenger bus were still on the flames. Rescue teams were pulling out the injured out of the flames.
Buildings in the area were evacuated in case of a second explosion.

The explosion occurred in an area which is also close to the city’s municipality building and courthouse, whose glasses were shattered at the time of the blast.

Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Deniz Baykal in a message released shortly after the explosion expressed that the explosion was profoundly saddening.

"Education Minister Hüseyin Çelik said, “I deeply condemn this blast if it is the result of a terrorist attack.” Justice and Development Party (AK Party) Deputy Ali İhsan Merdanoğlu, “This can only be condmende. A bomb directed at human beings has no use for any cause. Blood and violence do not solve problems.”
