Turkish parties submit bill to parliament to end Islamic head scarf ban at universities

A bill that would lift a decades-old
ban on women wearing head scarves at universities was
submitted to Turkey's parliament on Tuesday in a move that
worried secularists who fear the government is raising the
profile of Islam in this Muslim but secular country. Deniz
Baykal, leader of the pro-secular Republican People's
Party, called the attempt to lift the ban a "threat
against the republic." The lawmakers could vote on the
bill as early as next week. Founder of modern Turkey,
Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, banned religious attire in daily
life. The ban has been vigorously enforced in public
offices and schools since a 1980 military coup. Under the
new proposal, female students would be allowed to wear head
scarves at universities as long as they tied them under the
chin, leaving their faces more exposed.

It is good news - just make sure that you do not swing too far in the other direction and start banning women who do NOT wear headscarves!!

On balance though, it is a good thing. Nationalists are so paranoid about Turkey becoming an Islamic state but is dictatorship better?

Did people from the USSR suddenly become fervently religious after the ban on their religion ended?

Why not? Ban them all, for equality's sake!

I am sure you know the story :
'nasreddin hodja, sees two people are arguing and some others are watching the argument. And they ask hodja to be the judge. he listens to 1st person and he says 'you are right', and then the second person explains his side of the story, hodja says 'you are right too'. But someone from the crowd objects: 'how come both of them are right hodja?'. Hodja replies 'you are also right too'.
