People shouldn't be bought and sold - Stop the Traffik

Several weeks ago there was a discussion on here about the history /origins of slavery. I remember making the point that it was still going on today and cited the harvesting of beans for the chocolate industry as an example (child slavery).
I have just received a news letter from Stop the Traffik and they need more signatures to their petition against people traffiking, which is to be presented to the UN in a few weeks time.
Please take the time to visit their site and read about the plight of people around the world. If you agree that something needs to be done, perhaps you could start by signing their petition online.
Thanks

I agree something needs to be done, and will happily sign the petition, but do wonder what groups like this actually can achieve other than "highlighting awareness" as this practice is illegal anyway
Maybe I am defeatist this morning

Plant an acorn and an oak tree will grow.
Without awareness, nothing will be done. Action has to start somewhere.
I guess it's pretty much like TC world. Members often highlight injustices and this helps people become more aware of what is going on in the world. They themselves may become more involved/endeavour to learn more.
For instance, once somebody is aware of the child slavery involved in producing most of the chocolate, they can choose to buy only Fairtrade chocolate. In an ideal world, if more people become aware and make this decision then the chocolate industry may become very aware that their profits are at risk if they don't take the ethical route.
I am also reminded of a view that is often mentioned on this site. Silence about an issue may be viewed as unsupportive or indifference.
Thank you for taking the time to give your support.

Hmmm ok, maybe I am just a bit sceptical of sites that run petitions and ask for all your details (including phone number) and then want to use your details to send you their newsletter

The telephone number field is optional. One has the option to receive/not receive email. There is even an option to unsubscribe to email at any time in the future. They send out very little anyway.
Not a problem.
I guess we can query just about anything in this world if we have a mind to. If in doubt, don't sign.

This thread is about people trafficking. I've made the intention for the thread clear and I don't have anything further to add.

The people-traffic industry is supported almost entirely by drugs and prostitution. Or did you not know it?

Hey I have absolutely no argument with you! I mentioned the chocolate incident because that's what I referred to a few weeks ago. I am well aware of the different types of trafficking that goes on. In fact the link I gave earlier is not highlighting the chocolate issue. This is the topic of the page I linked to in my first post.
"Candy was 15. Her parents were persuaded, tricked, to let her be taken from her West African home to a new life in England. She was sold – ‘Trafficked.’ When she arrived, she was taken to a brothel and abused every hour, every day. Stories like Candy’s are happening all the time, making People Trafficking the world’s fastest growing illegal trade. We have to act now to stop it."
So, if anyone would like to add their names to the petition, please feel free to do so. The link is at the beginning of the thread.
