While studying Turkish, I came across the
following '-(i)mtrak' suffix:
sarı - yellow
sarımtrak - yellowish
kırmızı - red
kırmızımtrak - reddish
etc
Proud of my new knowledge, I tried using
it while speaking with some Turkish people
(who were not born in Turkey btw) - but they
never heard of this suffix.
So my question is: is this a valid suffix?
If so, might it be that is is only used in very
formal or written texts? Or is it just old-fashioned?
Many thanks!

Hi
it is very rear suffix in turkish which we do not use in daily conversations at all. So it is very normal that the people who were actuaklly born in Turkey and learnt the language via the ear (!) (in the family environment) may not be familiar with this structure.
When you define colors those are different tones of a certain color, you can use -mtrak suffix. Sarimtram means a different tone of the color yellow. Might me either darker yellow or lighter one.
Hope I could be helpful.

Many thanks, this explains a lot.
Indeed, the people whom I asked this learned
the language 'via the ear' from their family,
and not at school.
Thanks again!
