Sending money to Turkey

Hi all,
I was wondering how the best method was to send money to Turkey from the U.K. I have looked at Western Union and also Moneybookers.com which both seem expensive. I have an e-bay account and did think about PAYPAL but my wife would have to have a U.S. bank account in order to receive it there.
How do other members here send their relatives money in Turkey if they are living in the U.K. any other ideas?

Western Union is indeed expensive, but it is safe. I used it several times and am very happy about it, especially because the one you send it to can pick up the money the next day, whereas other transfers take several days.
Actually I dont know of any other transfer systems.. From a Dutch bankaccount you can just send money to a Turkish bankaccount, but you pay both exchange rate and costs to the bank, and it takes quite some time. I dont know for UK though.
Depending on the amount of money you send, Id go for western union.

Yes Western Union does seem the best and most importantly safest option I just do not agree with their high charges to send a greater amount of money

I am with Deli_Kizin on this one, Western Union is really the safest and easiest way to do it. Is it too overpriced but I have had many problems sending from bank account to bank account where the money didn't show up properly, got lost, you name it, and it ended up being a costly affair anyway. At this point I only trust Western Union even though I cringe every time I use it.

I've sent money a couple of times and I sent it through the Post Office by Moneygram. It was cheaper than Western Union and the money was available to collect within about half an hour.
BTW Richard - little late I know, but Congratulations on your marriage to Nesrin. I followed your story on here for quite some time now and it's so nice to hear a happy ending

I am still thinking about this service azade, yes the cost seems a lot to transfer a relatively small amount of money they must make a small fortune.

You are right Richard, I certainly would not mind being head of that business 
Perhaps the Post Office by Moneygram is an option only avaliable to brits, or I'm mad someone has not told me about it before but if it's cheaper and offers the same you should definitely check it out. There's no use in throwing money away unless it's necessary.

Yes Azade I am looking into this as I write, after just getting married I am very tight with my money now  but there again I always search the options on anything I buy first.

If somebody has a foreign money account (USD GBP or Euro, all of them are possible) in a bank in Turkey, they need to learn their SWIFT code or IBAN number for their account from their bank.
In your case, have her open a GBP account in a bank and learn her IBAN number (which is preferred in Europe) and tell it to you. Then you can go to a bank in UK and transfer your money to her bank account in Turkey using that number.
I receive money from abroad time to time and usually I pay the expense (well actually they pay but deduct it from the total I will get) and it is not more than $20 for me.

Thanks to angelina7 Moneygram is very useful and I appreciate your help, for example to send £250.00 English pounds by Western Union costs £27.00 Moneybookers.com is slightly cheaper at £24.00, but Moneygram is £9.99 now that is a saving and infact the outlets where my wife can pick up her money is more accessible
