Earthquake in England

I was woken at about 1:00am this morning, my house was shaking, the windows were rattling and wondered what the heck was happening!
Turns out there was an earthquake measuring 5.2 with the centre around 90km as the crow flies from where I live. The biggest one in the UK for 25 years. It said on the news that it only lasted for about 10 seconds, but it seemed to go on for a minute or so.
Apparently we get a lot of tremors but on about 1/8th of them can be felt.

for every 10 km, the measure drops 0.2 in scale. So if you are 90 kms away, you should reduce it by 9x0.2=1.8 to 3.4 and that means it should measure 3.4 if you were in the center. That's a very small one.
Compare it to the one we had in 1999. It was measured 7.4 and I was 70 kms away. So we had something like 6.0 in Istanbul. It was 45 seconds but it was like it took ages. We survived that one. But those around center were not lucky then. Many people died (~4000 .
And we are expecting another one anytime soon centered around Istanbul measuring above 7.0 (some expects ~7.5). Can we survive it this time. I'm not sure. Many people will die, unfortunately.

I live about 10 miles away from where the epicentre of the earthquake was (market rasen) and it scared the hell out of me! I had to run to my mums room hehe. At least no one was seriously injured.

We must be closer then as it was 4.7 in my area. Fortunately there is only a small amount of damage to a few houses, nothing like those in Turkey, or Afganistan despite how our media report it! Just thought I would post as a matter of interest cos most people would not expect UK to have earthquakes.

In some ways you are in a more dangerous situation seeing as in your area earthquakes are not expected, they are not considered in building or general emergency preparedness.
I stayed with some earthquake survivors in the Istanbul area who told me to keep a "whistle machine, flashlight, water on hand at all times.
I don't walk around with water, but the other things I keep with me at all times.

It was a small earthquake in Croatia too, this morning in 9:15am.

They dont need to be ready because UK is not on the fault!!

The problem is, they had an earthquake anyway. It makes me realize they really know about all the faults.
There was an earthquake in New York about 15 years ago, but they didn't know they were near a fault. Sometimes they are dormant for years.

Given the fact that earthquake prediction is not an exact science, being prepared would seem to be a good idea.
