Quoting vineyards:

There is no denying America is the mightiest, the most technologically advanced country with a highly efficient society and institutions.

My childhood hero was Zagor (Te-nai), I pursued him in search of new adventures in Darkwood Forest and laughed at Chico.

Since childhood, I have always wanted to visit the places depicted in Mark Twain's books. New Orleans with its Jazz music, Yosemite as recorded by Ansel Adams, LA Lakers basketball team, street basketball and the presence of many more opportunities in this giant country fortify my love towards it.

Well, I don't like the US Foreign Policy, I hate the US Defense Doctrine and I protest invasions of sovereign nations. When a country acts like that others protest that loudly and fervently, I am just one of those people; not an Anti-American...

Yes Vineyards,

You know visiting Turkia actually made me appreciate the beauty of the USA more. It's not that Turkia wasn't beautiful, but from looking and photographing interesting things there, I started looking around the US for interesting things here. I found wonderful architecture and fabulous natural beauty.

like:

Redwood Forests

or

Zion National Park
here and a lot to admire.

I love the diverse culture in the areas of the US I live in (the SF Bay Area and New York City) I can eat various types of Indian food, Japanese food, Ethiopian food and more. It's wonderful to explore the culinary delights of different cultures.

Like many here, I hope the next administration takes a different method of dealing with international and domestic matters.

In English our country is called Turkey. It is written with a capital "T" and is a homonym of turkey the Guinea fowl. In a language, a word may have more than one meaning and this is exactly the case for the word referring to Turkey.

There are certain processes that are instrumental in the formation of new vocabulary and in their gaining different meanings. None of them involves foreign intervention. Prescriptive approaches were tried in the past and they all failed because they were working against those natural processes.

I can not find a word to describe how improper the so called word Turkia is. It defies scientific facts and natural linguistic processes.

We Turks call Egypt as Misir which also means corn; the Turkish word for India is Hindistan which literally translates into English as "The land of Turkeys"; Abaza is both an adjective referring to a man who craves for a woman and at the same time to a subject of Abhasia. We used to call Iranians as Acemi which means inexperienced. Because our people do not have a habit of reading, they sometimes come up with these ridiculous inventions.

If we expect that the USA, UK, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and all the other English speaking people will change the name of our country to some other word just because we want to them to do so then we must accept foreign intervention in our own mother tongue.

Interesting Vineyards! Actually it is one reason I like to watch the Eurovision Song Contest so you actually get to find out what a country's real name is and not just our version!

"Mısır" comes from "Masri" or "Mısri" then it transfromed into "Mısır" by time in our language, because ancient egyptian people called "Masarian". Btw "egypt" comes from the root "gypsy", in fact ancient egyptians has no connection with "gypsies" .

Nice to see you arround armegon

Well,it has nothing to do with gypsy actually, its drifted from the greek word Aígyptos
Real name of Egypt was Kemet, then by time,it became Misr, said that it was a name of one of Noha's grandsons
And it also was the name Misr known about in Torah,Bible and Kur'an also

İ wish you could read arabic, the arabic version gives more details about it

Very interesting discussion. I agree with Vineyards that the attempt to impose a different name on a country, one that is not a reflection of natural evolution of language is wrong. All country names have their etymology and we should respect the changes.

There's an article on etymology of country names in Wikipedia.

Owww you missed the whole debate about changing TC. Let me fill you in, because some members here were complaining that Islam and Turkey are being ridiculed, new moderators were added to the forum and new rules were introduced. To avoid conflicts, it was decided that we stop insulting each other.

New rules stated that no discussion unrelated to Turkey should take place. This means no discussions about USA, Israel, Iraq, Afghanistan, Burkina Faso or Antarctica. However, most members were against it. That's why, if you read Catwoman's yesterday's post:

It's not Keith, but me who asked Alpha to stop posting so many threads about the US and Israel. This was our plan for the forums - not to allow discussions of foreign politics and religion unless it's directly related to Turkey. It seems that everybody is against this rule though, so we can modify it into posting foreign news in a moderate way.

maybe you'll finally understand what it is all about.

Unbelievable as it may seem to you, people in the west (USA or Europe) are not afraid of criticism, we criticise our countries ourselves. The main worry here was that these discussions have little to do with Turkey. If rules are changed (and I believe they should allow talking about everything including USA, Israel, Iraq, Afghanistan, Burkina Faso and/or Antarctica) you'll be free to say how much you hate USA. However, blaming mods for censoring your posts is a lie unless you prove it otherwise.

I do wonder though, why some members started to leave only AFTER the changes they called for were made. Again, that's pretty illogical...

we dont hate anybody,we just dont like ppl who always talk about our sensitive subjects such as islam, Turkey,Turkish, terrorism etc even though it is not their business...ppl here mostly from west like talking about these and they minimize Turks, islam etc...they should criticise their own country and religion.if u dont like Turkey or Turks why u spend time here in TC.what are their aims??? is it chanching topic, diverting ppl on their own way of thinking and effecting others???

some ppl really deserves swears that s why he sworn was adonis guilty???why he has ben deleted???
