Loll, you'd better have posted the one with subtitles, ís she actually answering any question at all? Sort of stream-of-consciousness eh? Just saying what comes up in her mind related to maps

Please don't think I'm implying this is normal for all Americans but watching those videos reminded me of when I was in the States last year. We were in a lift (elevator!!) and this American girl was talking to her friend about accents within America, Southern, Brooklyn, etc. and how easy it was to tell where people were from. I said 'well can you guess from my accent where I'm from then' (thinking 'she'll know I'm English but I wonder if she knows from which part of the country'). She thought for a moment and said 'Well, you are either European or Canadian'. Presumably she thinks that Europe is a country made up of the states of Germany, France, Austria, Italy, England etc. etc.!

LIR, your post reminded me of a satirical cartoon showing Americans' perception of the world. Like you, I'd never claim all Americans (or even most of them) are ignorant. Those I've met were all just the opposite. Still, this cartoon is funny:

I don't think this means that she thought that Europe is a country..

Well maybe she just had no idea that there are different accents in Europe - and thinks there is just a 'European accent'!
