Where? In Turkey? they do it to find out if the couples to be married have got any illnesses that can badly affect each other or their babies-to-be born.

They are testing for communicable diseases like syphyllis which is a sexually transmitted disease that can be detected in the blood. (Not all venerial diseases can be found in the blood.) HIV is also tested.
HOWEVER, when I got married in Turkey, I had my bloodwork done the day before I was married. I asked the laboratory how long it would take to do the testing and they said a few weeks. I told them that I was getting married the next day and asked if that would be a problem...they said NO. So although it is required, I don't know if the results are ever given to the patients or how it is reported or if it is reported to the government. They gave us a certificate of some sort which we gave to the marriage office and we were able to get married. So in reality...I don't know why they make you do it if they don't ever report the results to you or anyone else. It costs money...so maybe it is a money making issue. Who knows.

You are probably right it's a money issue. Technically it's because if you have some kind of illness like HIV you can't get married. But I also doubt if the papers are ever given to the authorities in question, because often medical reports for these type of things are just a paper signed by a couple of doctors, without them actually checking your health.
I'm afraid of blood tests etc. so I'm really dreading having to spend my wedding day doing these kind of things It's supposed to be a romantic and joyful day but all these required formal tasks are so clinical, I can't help but wonder if people would get married if they would not be looked down on by the society otherwise.

I am getting married in Turkey in about 3 weeks from now and was wondering.
Thanks to all who have spoken up.
