The situation in Burma should be a warning to ANY country who is over sensitive to criticism. Those Turkish nationalists who concern themselves with their country's reputation and outward appearence should take GOOD NOTE. Burma is a country who has a history of arresting anyone who disagrees or pays the slightest insult to their regime.. including writers and poets.. ring any bells?

The Burmese government are effectively killing thousands more people by blocking aid workers from entering and by hiding bodies to keep death tolls lower. Their efforts to cover up this tragedy are so "admirable" ...such a shame they could not have made the same effort in helping the dying. People are dying, unaware that an hours flight away in Bangkok, food and shelter and medical assistance are available.

Today, amid all the disaster around them, the Burmese are holding a constitutional referendum and will be more concerned with votes than with making efforts to help their own people.

Governments who put criticism and reputation before their own people are criminals.

Burmas shame - very true! So dispicable it is difficult to be able to find the words to write. How can anyone, and there are a whole raft of individuals, care so little about human life that they will not allow aid workers in. The worrying thing also, is the government could well see this as an opportunity to make money from aid and charity donations. This makes me so angry, that everyone who wants to help are in fact helpless.

I also noticed in the guardian article, the journalist is unamed for their own protection.

Are you actually blaming the UN for not helping? I am not a big fan of the UN but it is about the Government of Myanmar not letting aid get it....not the worlds refusal to help. The Myanmar government is content to let its people suffer rather than letting help in.

What a lovely thought! A kind of world police eh or a Thunderbirds style International Rescue? A rescue squad who ignore any government?

Hmmmm...hopefully they would be authorised to go and rescue women being stoned for showing an ankle, or beaten my their husbands too?

perhaps if we start with the fact that "people" are monkeys, it would make the whole conversation easier...

So that's how it works - if international organisations dare to criticise or, what's even worse, interfere, everybody's angry at them for not minding their own business. But if they don't interfere, they're the one to blame for all the bad things that go on...
