I have been to one in Turkey and found it very very relaxing. Also, I dont think I have ever felt so clean and refreshed as after going there

If you want, I can take you there on our honeymoon and give you a hamam-massage şekerim

Then go to a unisex hamam like you find in the hotels

I save money on paying for a masseur by going together with Kadir to a unisex one

So how does it work? Do you have to undress completely..? Is somebody actually giving you a scrub and wash? Couldn't you get an infection..?

So the hotel hamams are different then the regular ones?

Yes. There are authentic ones, which have seperate rooms for men and women and there are unisex ones like you find in the hotels. They are accesible for both men and women and you keep your bathclothing on.

It usually consists of a warmed 'belly stone' in the middle, surrounded by walls that have watertaps with cold and warm water and deep iron plates that you can put water in. You can 'hire' a masseur, a man or a woman, and you lay on the warmed stone in the middle and they give you a washing massage with lots of soap. Actually they have this funny thing which looks like a panty and creates loads of soap Then they wash off the soap of your body by splashing water from the iron plate that they took from the watertap.

Well there are hotel hamams which are just the same except they are accesible for men and women at the same time, and they are a little smaller than a traditional one I think!

Are there hamams that you undress completely? I also went to an 'imitation traditional hamam' with some girlfriends, but we just kept our bathclothing on.

Yes. You can hire one, have your partner do it, or do it yourself by sitting next to a water tap.

Not anymore than in the sea or a regular pool I think!

I enjoy to go. If I go, I usually go to the one in Princess Hotel which also have a sauna and a swimming pool with termal water, which does a miracle for my skin. I think we pay like 30ytl per person? Not sure though.

Are you serious? You must be of the type of people who also dont do mangal because it brings the food in open air and it might have bugs flying over it or sand.

I always splash loads of water over the stone before I use it, and we bring our own piece of soap. And whose fingernails are you talking about

I went to a hamam 3 years ago in Side. It was something for the tourist, I'm sure about it as it was a unisex hamam and when they ran out of masseurs for our group, they called the driver to help them lol. I could stand the steam room as I was sitting on my towel, not on the stone, but seeing guys rubbing foamy substance onto people and washing it down with a bucketful of water was too much so I ...ran away straight into jacuzzi Then I did go for a massage with oils (luckily for me I didn't get the driver). It was a bit traumatic as I hate being touched. It left me all greasy and smelly. Not an experience I'd go again for.

A woman with 'real wisdom'.
Look..
If you find those guys touching you and massaging you on that stone with previous people's germs and everything and find it clean and refreshing..It is fine.

But personally, I am not going there and not letting any of the woman who is associated me as a matter of principle, either..

I would not be comfortable with the idea that a semi naked man touching my semi naked partner..OK?

But..Of course..it is just my opinion..You are welcome to go and let be touched and massaged and get clean..lol

Actually I tend to see it as a 'useless foreplay' Because once you get home, you feel too clean to do anything

I enjoy to go. If I go, I usually go to the one in Princess Hotel which also have a sauna and a swimming pool with termal water, which does a miracle for my skin. I think we pay like 30ytl per person? Not sure though.

Is it unlimited time? Two years ago, in Istanbul there is one hamam where all tourists go and it was 50 ytl :-S

Is that the one in Cemberlitas? I've been to that one, and yes it was quite expensive, but it was a beautiful hamam too . Later I've been to a 'local' hamam, which was around 3 ytl (or 3 euros? 6 ytl?), but not as clean as the one in cemberlitas.

I'm amazed at how much you all worry about going to a hamam! Yes, the hamam in cemberlitas is definitely worth the money. At that time me and my friend were the only one in the hamam..
About the shaving.. like Deli_kizin said before, you have to wear underwear so what part of your body do you worry about shaving??

I especially had great fun in the local hamam, because it was just before the sacrifice day (forgot the name in English ). It was really busy, so I got lots of people looking at the 'foreign girl'. But all they actually said was that I looked nice because at least I looked as if I got enough food lol.

From memory and not wishing to cite Trudy to much, as she brought us some very interesting stories about her travels, but I am sure she told us about women shaving all areas before entering the hamman, and they were even given a bic razor and foam to do the job! Surely someone remembers!

I don't know, I dont think he translates poetry and song lyrics if he thinks Turkish poets and music is bad! He criticizes nationalistic feelings for as far as I understand, and exactly the reaction some people give, confirm his point

And to use 'critizice' just for saying you'd rather not go to a hamam because of hygenic reasons seems a bit overreacting to me? I don't eat kokoreç for hygienic reasons, but that doesnt mean I criticize the food itself

Well... still, it's ridiculous and appalling when people tell each other what is OK that they like (about turkey) because they are turkish (or because they are on this site)! It actually amazes me how turks censor each other and develop that fear of one another because they self appoint themselves to be a nationalistic thought police! Well..
A person like me, gets used to the tribal behaviors of my country's ethnocentrics.

We know the the fact that most of them were not taught 'how to think' by the ruling ideology.

They can not accept any criticism. They can not even THINK that somebody might have different ideas about hamams..lol

But it is quite interesting to see a Dutch girl thinks the same way..

Then, I guess, she will be treated in the same way..

But it is quite interesting to see a Dutch girl thinks the same way..

Then, I guess, she will be treated in the same way..

I dont think this criticism is about how to think or thinking freely, it s about experiences

How wrong you can be, man..
Why do you think I have had bad experiences? It is a pathetic assumption..is it not?
Turkey has been my life..I love that country into pieces..
But,of course, not the way racists love .
Their feelings are primitive, tribal instincts..
Mine are not!.

I am not expecting you to see or understand about my posts and why I am critical of some of the aspects in my country.
I have always been and I will always be.

And I am aware that some of the posts are huge slaps on the face of racists in Turkey.

But I believe that they are necessary considering how we all grew up..

Look..
Very simple..
You love something and you criticize it..
Because you want to see it in better shape..
You think that it can do better.
You think that it does not deserve what it is at the moment.
Your heart sinks when you see it as it is..
Because you love it.

btw..racism and love can be together..did you think hitler did not love germany?

Janissary, I see nothing logical and rational in your post. You are only showing that you cannot accept any criticism that is not in line with the ideology you have heard at schools. This is the problem, every Turk thinks almost the same (due to brainwashing) and whenever someone has a rational, logical way of thinking that conflicts with the brainwashed ideology, she/he is seen as a threat. Why does it bother you so much that handsom doesn't agree with you? I think the reason is that he is a threat to you, because he has a point that is hard to disagree with (if you are honest and rational). If his criticism was non-threatening, you wouldn't care about it.

Also, you are confusing disagreement and criticism with hatred. These are two completely different things, ok? What I would call hatred is actually your own attitude towards handsom and towards people who dare to criticize turkey and threaten your ideas. You show your hatred in the way you are aggressive in defending your ideas, in calling other people as "hateful" for no reason other then for their right to disagree with you.

Look, people have the right to have their own opinions and criticisms and you need to respect that.

It is ludicrious that someone saying they dislike public baths turn into yet another nationalistic roustabout!
Why is it that handsom can't simply have an opinion about hygiene without it being against all things Turkish?
Do you not have any idea how ridiculous this is?

I've been to over 15 different hammams, traditional and tourist ones. I've had massages from males and females. I don't mind who does it as long as the massage is good - I can tell quite well if it's okay because of massage techniques I learned on school years ago. Sometimes I was dressed up in bikini, sometimes just undies, sometimes naked, depending on the hammam rules. I paid between 15 and 50 YTL for bathing including a massage. Some hammams were big, some were not, some were clean, some not. In most I got many, many peshtemals and in just a few they only gave me one (which was soaken wet within minutes!). Shortly said: they differ as much as everything else in life.

This has become more like a blood bath than a foamy bath! I to would not set foot inside a haman, I hate the thought. But everyone is entitled to their opinions, their likes and dislikes. If we all liked the same things how boring life would be, for a start there would be no fights on TC. lol

I happen to agree with you libralady. I would never set foot in one myself. Of course I am speaking from the stand point of complete germophobe....but the thought of a strange person touching me....the thought of laying on something that someone elses dead skin could be on...it's enough to send me into a panic attack!!

Sorry to hear about this, although the truth is that YOU don't respect other people's opinions at all.

I don't see any reason for mods to do anything here, if you feel like there is a problem, it's your responsibility to inform a mod before crying here like a baby. I think you are just trying to make mods feel guilty just because nobody here agrees with you and you are acting like a victim instead of being an adult and accepting that maybe you have done/said something wrong. You are continually attacking handsom on a personal, hateful basis, even though nobody is doing that to you. Please stop that, it's unaccaptable.

Oh, please. Someone didn't respect your thoughts about hamams and that's why you are attacking handsom now?
You are not really taking responsibility, it doesn't matter where the circle starts, if you want to be respected, you have to respect others as well, and if you don't, then you have no right to complain about not being respected.

If you had been insulted here, then you should have reported it to someone, doesn't have to be me, you can send a PM to admin. I believe some people called you racist because of your opinions that hinted at racism - Turks are better then others, nationalism taken to the next level, not tolerating any criticism... etc. Racism does not automatically mean killing others, it is an underlying ideology of one group being superior to others or hatred of "others" just because they are "others". Still... I agree that it shouldn't have been directed at you personally..

Ama canim... we are also against terrorism, absolutely! But I was saying that the Turkish government was the source of terrorism against Kurds ever since the start of the Republic, with a significant increase in the 90s (thanks to the help of the US).
I think you have to accept the fact that there are things many people will criticize about Turkey, do you respect their opinions? I think not... not yet at least. You don't like things that are happening in other countries as well, I'm sure you bash the US on a daily basis. Does it mean that we don't love Turkey or that we wouldn't want to visit or that there are not other things that we like? Of course not!

I've always thought that I am a great enthusiast of Turkey. However, applying the criteria some people on this site use, I am in doubt because:

1. I didn't like the hammam experience but I loved using swimming pools
2. I hated kokoreç but I could kill for künefe
3. I consider Turkish males too pushy but I really like my friends who seem nothing like it
4. I don't consider Ataturk god and I do think everybody is free to speak their mind about him, yet, I understand how important he is to Turkey
5. I hate Ismail YK - both his songs and his looks, Tarkan but I love Yasar and many many more
6. I think it's better if Turkey stays secular

from the first, they are trying to despise Ataturk. some called him lier, some racist here, as if they know him. I understand why they dont like ataturk, coz he didnt allow their grand grand fathers to share our lands and govern us

7. I think Turkish government is responsible for PKK, yet, I am against giving any part of Turkey to Kurdistan and I'm against PKK

Balım, we really dont care what u think about these issues. u really think over too much on these. it s our bussiness, not urs. we live in this country. we go to hamam, eat kokoreç, drink rakı, smoke nargile, love our country and enjoy life. stop suffering there balım.

Balım, they all say like this. when they feel a bit relaxed they tell their real aim. these ppl who talk freedom of speech, know think turkey must divide in 23 regions but before they were just talking about human-rigts, freedom. I dont think turkey has a different politics for ethnic groups than european countries

Sui, dear, I see I wasn't clear enough. Let me rephrase it:

I've heard many names that guys give to their private parts, but it's the first time I've heard the term regime used for it.

And it was intended as a funny remark. I didn't call Turkey a regime, though you are pretty armed!

how you know, there is no millions of people trying to get into Turkey

you dont know because Turkey doesnt apply those sick procedures to who want to live here...

this is exact to be seen by the percentage of foreigners living in south of Turkey

I am not sure if Lapinkulta or anyone else can punish you, but there are many rules about this. The most famous one is protecting Atatürk. I know that sounds a bit unpractical but let's say you were a Turkish citizen (I don't know if the law is for foreigners too), and you talk badly like that. You may stand trial because of that, depends on what you say exactly.

I am not a lawyer so I don't know how these laws work on the websites but as far as I know, site may be warned or banned because of this protecting rules. So maybe you won't be punished but things seem a bit wrong then.
