An enduring tale of urban eyesore

I don't understand this at all. This isnt a tourist area, nor on the water. This building is next to where the US Consulate used to be. Nothing special at all. What a waste of money if TRT is forced to move...

From the photo it does seem to me to be quite ugly (shape, colour), and this is a shame because glass can be used so much more imaginatively. There are many glass buildings around the world that compliment their surroundings and even literally reflect the beauty of their surroundings and so blend in effectively. Perhaps this is the problem here, if the surroundings aren't very awe inspiring, that's what is literally reflected by the building.

But does every building have to be glamourous?? This was typical modern 70's architecture.
And again. This is not a tourist area. Its on a major throughfair with speeding traffic. This is not an area that has major foot traffic.
This money can be better spent...

No. I would say functionality should always hold sway. I don't think I said every building should be aesthetically pleasing to the eye. I was assuming that perhaps people didn't like the building because it was made from glass and I was stating a case for glass.

I would say though that an alternative to the colour red might have been more subtle (IMO). Does the colour red have some connection with the company?

Some months ago I posted a photo of one of my favourite buildings. I've visited it a few times over the last 30 years and it's still (I think) a magnificent building, extremely functional and beautiful when lit at night. If my memory serves me well I think it is also know as the inside out building, for obvious reasons.

Keith, thank you for posting such an interesting article.
Modern American architecture would certainly not be suitable for this particular area in Istanbul.

Have a look at this link:
