I downloaded some sebnem ferah songs (after Uzeyir's admiration of her )
One of them was "Ãœnzile", an Onna Tunc music, made famous by Sezen Aksu and written by Aysel Gurel.
And apperantly it is a true story.
Years ago, Aysel Gurel met Unzile and listened to her story when she was touring Anatolia.
And this song always makes me disturbed somehow.

Anyway here it is:

ünzile insan dölü
on kardeş beşi ölü
büyüdükçe unufak
ve gelir de görücü
inci gibi dişi
görücü bilir işi
söğüdüm ağlar gider
olur hatun kişi

varmadan sekizine
ergin oldu ünzile
hem çocuk hem de kadın
onikisinde ana
bir gül gibi al ve narin
bir su gibi saydam ve sakin
susar kadın ünzile

yağmuru kim döküyor
ünzile kaç koyun ediyor
dayaktan uslanalı
hiçbir şey sormuyor

korkar durur gitmez
köyün en son çitine
inanır o sınırda
dünyanın bittiğine

ünzile insan dölü
bilinmezlere gebe
sırların mihnetini
yükleyip de beline

varmadan sekizine
ergin oldu ünzile
hem kadın hem de çocuk
onikisinde ana
bir gül gibi al ve narin
bir su gibi saydam ve sakin
susar kadın ünzile

=====
Unzile is an offspring
Ten sibblings, five dead
When she grows, still small
And matchmakers come
Teeth like perls
Matchmaker is an expert
And my willow leaves home with tears
Then, becomes a woman

Before reaching eight
Unzile becames an adult
She is both a child and a woman
A mother at twelve
Frail and ruddy like a rose
Transparent and calm as water
Woman unzile stays silent

Who is spilling the rain?
How many sheep is unzile worth?
Since she is diciplined with whippings
She asks no more questions

She is scared to go
To the last corner of the village
She believes the world ends
In that border

Unzile is an offspring
Pregnant to unknowns
Carries the misery
Of secrets in her belly

Before reaching eight
Unzile becames an adult
She is both a child and a woman
A mother at twelve
Frail and ruddy like a rose
Transparent and calm as water
Woman unzile stays silent

What a beautiful, but sad song. It reminds me of the story a Greek friend of mine told about his mother's marriage.

She was a young girl playing jump rope outside (in New York City) and her parents called her to come in. She was told she was to be married. In the next few days she was married. They don't know exactly how old she was, but a very young teen at the most.

This must have happened around the early 1920s. His grandparents were immigrants from some Greek area. So sad from a child one day to a wife the next.
