Creationism should be included in science lessons to reduce the confusion among the rising numbers of schoolchildren who have been brought up to reject the principles of evolution, one of the country´s leading scientists said yesterday.
..
The professor,... said the move would help pupils understand that such literal beliefs in religious scripture are not supported by scientific evidence.
..
Surveys show that more than 10 per cent of children believe that the Earth is only a few thousand years old rather than the four billion years or so accepted by science. An even greater proportion of schoolchildren does not believe that humans and all other species of life on earth evolved from common ancestors as a result of Darwinian natural selection, he said.
some of the comments to the article:
One in ten pupils probably thinks Britney Spears would make a good President of the United States - it doesn´t mean that it should be taught in schools.
Creationism as such should not be taught in science lessons, because it is not science. But it is a splendid exemplar of ´not science´ that can and should be used to teach what science is.
Any thoughts?

I like the idea of discussing all theories of the origin of life at school- creationism as well. Thus a child will know how it relates to science.
We had a different suggestion in Poland, made byone of our Euro-deputies, who also happens to be the father of our ex-minister of education. He suggested all other theories are excluded from curriculum and creationism only is taught

I agree. Children with parents that believe in creationism will learn about evolution and vice versa, it can never be bad for a child to learn to look at theories from different perspectives. I wonder what is taught in the US though, a couple of days ago I read an article that many Americans believe the world is not even 10.000 years old and that on Noah´s Ark there were dinosaurs present....
A little of topic DD, wasn´t your former minister of Education the one who wanted to prohibit broadcasting of the Teletubbies because Tinky Winky (with the purple triangle) was supposed to be gay?

I agree too.
A few months ago, one of my pupils pulled away the chair of another student who was about to sit, and as a result fell on the ground. I told them the fable that when someone falls badly on their coccyx, this can result in blindness, and therefore you should never pull such nasty jokes. It was merely to scare them. They asked what the coccyx is, so I told them that it is the tailbone, and that (according to the evolution theory) its main function was to support the tail, a function that has been long gone now, and that now it just is an attachment point for several muscles and a shock demper for when you sit down (not fall down ).
They were in shock that I even consider the evolution theory to be something that could possibly be true.
So yes, I suppose that multiple visions on the beginning and existence of the earth and humankind in any educational system, is a fine idea.

It wasn´t him, it was our Spokesperson for Children´s Rights (she even got a 3rd place in a worldwide ranking of the Idiot of the Year award). Still, that minister, who was a nationalistic, Catholic bigot and everybody was happy when he was called off, supported her He is responsible for the idea to lay off the teachers who are homosexuals and to keep a record of sexual preferences of everybody in order to control the pest...
