Evidently, I sent some money to a friend in Turkey..only a small amount that I owed, by putting it in a oversized envelope along with a few other items. So far, the letter has not arrived. They think it is because someone in the postal service has opened it and taken the money. There was only 20 euro in it, which is not much is it? Anyways, my questions are
1)is that a usual thing in Turkey for workers to open packages!!!???
2) is there a special way to send money to someone without having to know any bank account information etc etc..??

For everyone's interest...this info might be helpful...

I would never send money through postal services, whether it is overhere, in Turkey or in Polynesia..
Isn't Western Union the kind of service you're looking for? I've never tried it but you might want to check it out.

Not letters but parcels can be opened in the customs to check what is in and whether duty has to be paid or not.

There is an upper limit for duty free items. I think items that are worth up to €100 are duty free but I'm not sure on this.

Even when you send your items with UPS, DHL or Fedex a costums official checks them or at least samples of them. Still we are not a EU country and we are having huge problems with costums when sending items to Turkia.

Our postal service works very slow but I don't belive there are many incidents where letters are opened (I mean letters and not parcels). I think if you wanted to send cash putting it inside a letter would be safer than a package. Of course there are much safer ways than this but for twenty quid I would not pay 5 quid either.

It is also worth remembering that the majority of people in Turkey live in apartment buildingd and the mail is generally delivered to mailboxes on the ground floor. It's quite possible that your letter did not go astray until this point.

For example - I left a Christmas card in our box for my boyfriend (at 1am on December 23rd) before he drove me to the airport (I went home to see my family for Christmas). He never got the card - by the time he checked the box at 9am someone had taken it...

I sent a gift to a female friend in Turkey. It took well over a month for her to get it but it was intact completely and with no evidence of tampering when she finally received it.
I think the snail mail there is much slower and it might have to sit in Customs for a while?
Anyway, how long have you waited for the package to arrive, when did you send it?
She and I laughed about it every day, I talked to her via Messenger. I think it was close to 5 weeks and she opened Messenger one day and was ecstatic at having finally received the package. I have met many turkish people and I think they are very wonderful, honorable, trustworthy, friendly people, I would give it more time if it has been a recent mailing. RDB

I send money all the time from USA to Turkey, but I use Western Union and it is there within the hour.

I would never send any currency via mail, as packages are inspected for customs purposes and Turkey does not allow currency to be sent. You may be lucky and maybe it will be delivered.

I send packages to Fethiye all the time, however, delivery is delayed. Pacakaged are guaranteed to arrive at major city post offices, but for smaller towns, villages, they wait until they have several pacakages/mail to deliver, sometimes 30 days.

Anyway, good luck.
