With the price of ciggies in the UK now at £5.75, I have realised that if I smoke 20 a day for the next 5 years, I will spend £10,493 !!!!!!!!

Any advice on the best way to stop? Lozenges, chewing gum, hang myself?

You may want to try my way - get somebody to knock you up By the second month I wasn´t smoking. But then, if it´s only about saving money it doesn´t seem the right way

Saving money has given me more incentive than anything else ever has in this current climate!!!  I don´t think having a baby is a good idea though right now and I fear it would cost me more than smoking

I gave up just over a year ago. I read that alan carr book and weirdly never smoked again. I struggled for years to quit then I just stopped no patches or substitutes

My husband (2 pack a day smoker) was able to quit relatively easily with the prescription drug Chantix.  He was on it for only 6 weeks and quit completely.  That was almost one year ago.  Because the drug blocks certain nicotine receptors, but prepared for strange dreams or a few sleepless nights.  Other than that, there were little side effects.  You just need to talk to a doctor about it.

I quit DD´s way.....12 years ago when I was pregnant.....both ways are highly successful ways to quit.  Good luck!!

Patches are OK

but don´t try chewing gums, it´s a procedure to take them!!

There are also, at least in my country, herbal ciggies to help you stop smoking, but they´re 4 times more expencive than normal cigarettes hahaha

You can also try hypnosis lol

My aunt and uncle quit smoking together ´cold turkey´ on a Valentine´s day a couple years ago, and they used to smoke for many years (she smoked probably for more then 10 years), more then a pack a day...

well I am a professional quiter. I have successfully quit at least 5 times. I find the patch helps me the best but then as soon as I´m done with the patches the urge is there. I´m sure its mental but I still feel the urge at least 10 minutes after I remove it.

I also have thought of trying the chantix, but anything that a major side affect is suicidal thoughts scares the crap out of me! So from every resource I have found the success rate to be the highest from quitting cold turkey and not getting frustrated by slip up.

i signed up at becomeanex.org, its at least giving me a little added support. Might help you too. Good luck dear!

Once a chain smoker of the worst kind, I quit in February, 2001 after having smoked for 15 years. I still remember the 14th of February as one of the most important days in my life. Never ever smoked a single cigarette since then. I just quit it and embraced the dire consequences.

I knew by practical thinking that the craving would someday go away and thankfully it really did.

It is not "cold Turkey", but "cold turkey"! The "turkey" in the phrase does not refer to the country, but to the bird. lol

The phrase "cold turkey" describes the skin´s reaction to heroin withdrawal. As an addict stops using the drug, blood is drawn toward the internal organs, leaving the skin to resemble a cold, plucked turkey. The phrase is dated to 1910 and it originally meant "without preparation", referring to the ease of making a dish of cold turkey.

in fact smoking cause more kidneys cancers than lungs´ ......

you may try this:

for 21-30 days every morning and then every hour tell yourself "I m non-smoker" just his phrase. Feel yourself so. imagine yourself person who does not smoke. though you may smoke during this period. do not connect this to any reminder like alarm or cell ring.

I quit for almost 4 years cold turkey. Missed it everyday...the craving never left me.  But I do know for certain many of my friends have quit using the new script Lis was referring to Chantix.  I would suggest trying this if you can get the script, it´s pricey here in the U.S.

One suggestion take stock in coffee stirrers, if you smoke in your car.  For some reason holding these and chewing on them while driving helped me.  {#lang_emotions_lol_fast} Sounds funny, but worked at least for 4 years.  The worst part for me was drinking coffee and after a meal, that´s when the craving was the worst.  I think if you have your mind made up and stay focused you can do it.

I simply went out with the girls one night and had a drink, bummed a smoke and bought a pack...that´s how easy it is to pick it up again.  Good Luck!

You should use your "brain power" (everybody has it), not anything else and stop it immediately. I know many people around doing it without any help. They just decided and did it.

Dearest Cat

Thank you for the Alamedaish link.  I am aware, of course, what "cold turkey" means but mistyped turkey with a capital ´T´ out of habit on this site!!!!!

It was a genuine error and (Dearest Si++++++++ please note) was NOT in anyway meant to offend Turkish people!  Actually the turkey bird is named after Turkey, not the other way round, so you should not be so sensitive about it! {#lang_emotions_you_crazy}

 I believe you

Only sort of surprised youre smoking? Anyway good luck! Saying you´re a ´non smoker´ may sound funny, but it does help!

I just ´postponed´ every cigarette ý felt like taking. For example if I felt the urge I pushed myself to take it 10 minutes later etc. In the end I was able to postpone the breakfast cigarette till the noon, and now I am at the teabreak That is the hardest to quit and I still take one ocasionally, but not the way I used to. Set myself an ultimatum and sticking to it!

Yes, I think your way is the BEST way.  If I tell myself "no more" I will get all emotional about it hehe.  I also decided to leave ONE cigarette in the house, because I sometimes notice that the craving for a smoke is often much worse if you don´t have any.  If it is there I can tell myself "you can maybe have it later" and just keep postponing it.

I hope so anyway...

AE, I´ve just come up with a brilliant idea. Find some Poles around you (I´m sure there´s plenty of them) and ask them to sell you fags. I don´t know a single Pole smoking cigarettes other than Polish, so they´re good quality but way cheaper then those sold in shops. A Lithuanian will do too, they´re the second biggest migrant group and they hate paying too much for their smoke lol
