We have the same here in the states.  We also have what´s called a GED. (General Education Development Test).  People can take this test who decide to drop out of high school...I guess it´s equivalent to a high school diploma...but I think more frowned upon.

More or less the same in Poland:

Kindergarten certificate

Primary school certificate (after 6 years)

Middle school certificate (after 3 years)

Secondary school certificate (after 3 or 4 years)

Finishing secondary school you may take Matriculation Exam and get Matriculation Certificate, if you were in a technical secondary school you take Occupational Exam and get a Certificate

Then

B.A.

M.A.

Ph.D.

Professor´s Degree

 Oh, don´t get me feeling sentimental now.  I remember my little guy´s preschool graduation...with the little paper graduation hats they made....his toothless smile.....how he gave everyone in the family a copy of his "diploma"!   {#lang_emotions_cry}  Now he´s almost a teenager! {#lang_emotions_cry}

because we love the red tape {#lang_emotions_confused}

Nah, you need a certificate to get accepted into the next level - you´re admited to the next school depending on the results of the former one. With bad grades from primary school you´re unlikely to get into a good middle school etc. On each level you have about 14 subjects annually so that´s a pretty hard job. Additionally after each level you pass a national test

This is so unfair

We didn´t get any certificates at school

The only certificate I got was for Cycling Proficiency ... although I did get a pretty badge for "showing I could make a cup of tea" in the Brownies - does that count?

Edited (3/6/2009) by TheAenigma [I put two ´f´s in "proficiency"...luckily I was not boasting about my spelling proficiency ]

Really :shocked:

Here each state school has a catchment area and anyone in that catchment area has an automatic right to attend that school provided it is not already over subscribed.  It is slightly more complex because many primary schools are church schools and aided church schools can set their own admission policy but for the most part it is still the case that anyone in their catchment area will get a place if there is one.

Almost without exception, the only schools that can be selective over intake on academic grounds are private schools.
