Turkish clinic under scrutiny for illegal gender selection

The Health Ministry and Istanbul Chamber of Physicians have initiated an investigation into a private gynecology clinic upon BBC´s reports on Wednesday  that it offers illegal gender selection to couples who want to have baby.

A doctor from Jinemed, a 19-year-old clinic also known for infertility treatment, was exposed by a BBC reporter with a hidden camera saying they guaranteed to determine a baby´s gender. “A growing number of British couples are undergoing procedures at clinics overseas to determine the gender of their babies,” and Turkey is among those countries, the BBC reported. A BBC reporter with her husband went to see Jinemed doctors, who came to London to see prospective patients, and told the doctors they wanted a girl. The doctor in the hidden camera footage said they could guarantee the gender of the baby using a Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis method.

Professor Teksen Çamlýbel, the founder of the clinic, did not respond to the Turkish Daily News´ repeated calls to respond to the allegations. However, Çamlýbel denied allegations to the daily Milliyet Wednesday arguing that these were a reaction to British couples going abroad for infertility treatment. “There is an economic war going on backstage,” he said. “Upon their demand, we send patients to clinics in northern Cyprus, Greece and the United States.”

Meanwhile, both the Health Ministry and Istanbul Chamber of Physicians initiated an investigation into the clinic. There are no previous complaints against the clinic on this issue, according to information the TDN obtained from the chamber. The Health Ministry, would not comment as the investigation is ongoing into possible sanctions if the allegations are true.

There are lots of things to take in mind when reading this and considering its authority. For example its only one source and I would be interested to read other inofrmation regarding this.

But the sad matter is this does happen so much. Before in the uk it was common place practice not to allow the parents to know the sex of the baby before a certain term, for fear that some people from male dominated cultural backgrounds (hows that for being politically correct) would abort a girl, prefering to try again for a boy instead.

Now it is easy to find out the gender of an unborn baby, so I am surprised as to why people would go abroad to choose the gender of a child. I think some advancement has been made in embryo selction but I am unsure. Nevertheless it would be cheaper to do the above.

What a world we live in where people could go for such lengths just to choose a boy or a girl. Maybe the whole design a baby isnt too far away.

There was a short article about this in the Independent last week.
