Belgian and French tourists "kept hostages" in Turkey

More than one hundred Belgian and French tourists, in majority of the elderly persons, are "kept hostages" since Saturday in a hotel in Turkey after the bankruptcy of their belgian tourist operator, denounced Sunday the travel agency.

The hotel administration claims 80,000 Euros due by the corporation Christophair, the tour operator.  To obtain the regulation of this sum, the hotel administration blocked my customers, explained Richard Naujokas, director of the agency of Belgian trip "Voyages à tout coeur", that sold this stay in the station of Antalya, on the "Turkish Riviera".

Repatriated Monday

"One does not take  people  hostages.  One does not have to take it out on the customers", He said on the microphone of the chain of private television rtl-tvi.  A part of the debts of the tour operator -40.000 Euros- was regulated by the funds of guarantee of the trips but the hotel direction demands the balance.

The 147 tourists must be repatriated Monday, but they had to acquit a sum of 275 Euros by person to be able to attain Sunday to their rooms and eat.

When I read stories like this, I´m so happy there is an organisation in my country that will cover all costs of staying or repatriating when your tour operator goes bankrupt.

We are covered in the UK if your tour operator goes bankrupt, but if you book your hotel direct (online) you are not covered.  It is best to book hotels through ABTA websites. If you book your flight independently you are only covered if you paid with credit card.

Indeed, booking online might be only covered by the credit card company or your travel insurance. But when you book here a hotel through an approved travel agent - without flight e.g. - your bookings are covered as well.
