Religion is vital for your life.

May I ask you?

What is your religion?

-        Islam

-        Christian

-        Jewish

-        Christian/Protestant

-        Christian/Catholic

-        Christian/LDS

-        Christian/Other

-        None/Agnostic

-        Scientology

-        Hindu

-        Buddhist/Taoist

-        Atheist

-        Spiritual but not religious

-        Not Religious

-        Other

P.S. We are Muslim.

We should of course respect other peoples cultures, opinions, religions and values.

Why the combination of ´none/agnostic´. It doesn´t make sense in my opinion. And since when is ´atheism´ in a list of religions

That was exactly my first thought when I saw "atheism" in the religion´s list.

Isn´t being ´Not religious´ the same thing as ´none´?  And as DK says, how is Atheism a religion?  You didn´t include Satanism or Witchcraft in the list.  I am sure we have had a thread/post like this recently - it´s a bit repetitive.

Plus there is not just one form of Islam. Check out this map:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f1/MuslimDistribution3b.JPG

Even that does not take into account the millions of Alevites in this country. They are not the same as Shiite or whatsoever. The map further disregards 3 million muslims in Germany, 1.7 million in the UK, the  Muslim populations of Bulgaria and Greece. There is also no talk about 7.5 millions muslims in the US.

Yes there are. But I think there are more Turkish Christians who do not say it openly.. I know of the murders on Christian Turks in Malatya. One of the reasons I wont forget it is because the name of the daughter of the murdered man was my own name, Esther.

As for Turkish people who openly say it: I twice went to a church in Ýzmir. I think it was called the ´light church, church of light, smt like that´. It had an international sphere. I went there with a Brazilian catholic family of mine who also lives in Ýzmir. They asked me and Kadir to come for the Eastern and Christmas celebration. There were mainly foreigners in the church who happened to live in Ýzmir (germans, british, brazilian etc), but also some from the east (I spoke to a few Iranians, who said the moved to Ýzmir because of their religion, it was safer to practice it openly there than in their own country), but also some Turks! Some of them said they are open about it. But not all of them are: a week later we ran into a Christian Turkish couple in a shopping mall. They were with friends and immediately told us in English, so that their friends would not udnerstand,  not to mention the fact we had met them in church..

There are also ´ethnically´ Turks who are christian. I hate the word ´ethnically´, but I just wanted to stress that its not only the ones who are citizens of Turkey, but also the ones who are ´ethnically´ Turk. Most of the ones I have come across were converts, who grew up in a Muslim family, or who came from a family who was converted 1 or more generations ago.

but I do think most of the Christians in Turkey are from ´foreign´ origine, as you said Syrians for example. But its not true that there arent any ethnically Turk christians.

Jewish holocaust in Europe dates back before the wwii. in the middle age, being jewish was banned all over Europe. That`s why many Sephardic Jews fled to the ottoman empire to live in a "non-westernized(thus crappy)" country.

Well, having mentioned holocausts and the stuff; I guess one of the most remarkable events in the near history that points out to the continuation of religious and ethnic awareness in the heart of Europe was the ethnic cleansing carried out by the Serbs; Bosnians´ being denied of receiving arms to protect themselves by France and Russia and the surrender of Bosnian civilians  to the Serbian militia  by the Dutch commander in charge who was pictured drinking wine and exchanging smiles with his Serbian counterpart. The Bosnians would then be murdered and raped and the Dutch commander would put the blame on their lack of power.

A number of Greek, Swedish and Russian ultranationalists came to fight in the ranks of the Serbs against the Muslims. Greek flag was hoisted after the completion of the invasion of a town.

In Europe, it all takes a spark to unleash the ethnic terror examples of which we have seen over and over.

Then why did you say that Europe was slaughtering Jews 65 years ago?

Perhaps you should do some more reading about WWII because some members here (most members here actually) lost their grandfathers during WWII. And guess what, they didn´t fall out of the warden´s tower in concentration camps. They died because they were opposing Nazists. People all over Europe would give shelter to Jews risking their own lives. And you just put the whole Europe into one pot

Yes in the middle ages Jews were persecuted as they constituted a serious threat to Christian wielders. They didn´t constitute a religious threat, but monetary one. Most countries were in debt to Jews and instead of paying them off they preferred to kick them out of Europe. Religion was, as always, just an excuse. Mediocrity would never attack Jews for the reason that their noblemen are in debt to them. But once the rumour that Jews eat children and drink their blood spread - everybody was casting stones and burning down Jewish settlements. Was it a good thing? Of course not! But that was middle ages, the times when average lifespan was 40 years, education was almost non-existent and plagues were reducing population by hundreds. People were backward, believed in many stupid things so it was so easy to tell them that Jews are responsible for everything.

I´m not actually married to a Turk but am in a happy relationship with one, so I can let you know from my perspective. I think the only reason why this is working out between us is that neither one of us is very religious - I´m raised Catholic but currently agnostic and he´s Muslim of course. If we both were very religious I think we might have some problems. We do talk about religion, but we have a mutual respect for each other´s beliefs (well, we try lol) and an agreement that we´re not going to try to "convert" the other. The topic comes up when we discuss having children in the future and what religion they will be brought in - and again, since I´m not religious, it´s not a major issue for me but I would like them to be able to choose for themselves. The one thing that is sort of problematic is that if we do get married, we won´t be able to have a religious ceremony, I don´t think. And it´s also a pity he doesn´t eat pork , I make a killer pork tenderloin lol.

thanks for that Melek

.... i was just thinking last night....

i do remember though that Ephesus is part of Turkey right? isn´t Ephesus a big part of the whole Christian religion movement, hence the book of the Bible Ephesians?

Isn´t the book of Ephesians about Christ, being the head of the church? And the books emphasis is place squarely on Christ, and who the people are in Him. It also teaches how parents´ primary goal  is to help their children establish a firm foundation for life by nurturing  a self-concept and self-esteem rooted in the reality of who we are in the Lord.

(makes me wonder why today in present, family ties, and parental approval is so important among Turkish people, ... just making an assumption... )

Maybe in history, there are also Turks who are Christians... in Ephesus.... but i just don´t know about today... and why that part of the country has also changed into people who believe in Islam now...

can someone enlighten me on this?

Then why did you say that Europe was slaughtering Jews 65 years ago?

Perhaps you should do some more reading about WWII because some members here (most members here actually) lost their grandfathers during WWII. And guess what, they didn´t fall out of the warden´s tower in concentration camps. They died because they were opposing Nazists. People all over Europe would give shelter to Jews risking their own lives.

like what the Poles did to them in the ww2? but of course it`s the best for Europeans to blame only Nazis (not even Germany)

hmmmm.... i will try and make an input about how radical islams also have had the German influence (nazzis)  involved.... there is this guy highly renowned by a majority of islam believers, who is a follower of Hitler himself... i will give it more research i just forgot...

it´s a documentary made about "radical Islams" (please take note i´m not referring to all muslims and all Islam.... i´m only referring to the radical Islams here... ) , called The Obsession, and it shows how the Germans also have made an influence in which radical Islams are practicing now... the belief of Holy War, and to conquer and dominate America, and Europe.

i don´t know how you guys can watch this documentary movie.... but here´s the link and trailer...

The facts are as follows:

But according to you it is Poles who exterminated Jews during WWII? lol

Christianity is a religion of sword but Islam is a religion of love? lol

Lets see, in holy books of both there are fragments that might and have been interpeted in such a way to give excuse for manslaughter, but neither of them is theoretically pro-war. Followers of both religions are responsible of great number of deaths. So what´s the difference?

Christianity was bloody in the past while Islam still is. And that´s all.

I disagree. Hitler was not a Christian.  His writings:-

11th-12th July, 1941

"National Socialism and religion cannot exist together....
"The heaviest blow that ever struck humanity was the coming of Christianity. Bolshevism is  Christianity´s illegitimate child. Both are inventions of the Jew. The deliberate lie in the matter of religion was introduced into the world by Christianity....
"Let it not be said that Christianity brought man the life of the soul, for that evolution was in the natural order of things." (p 6 & 7)

Both religions are responsible for bloodshed. But I haven´t heard of many Christian bombings recently. Have you? {#lang_emotions_unsure}

if she had said radical islam is fascism like what you said, I would have agree with her. but her trying to relate nazism to radical islam is plain christian-neocon propaganda. and its only objective is to deny the nazi past of christianity by portraying it smt not related to christianity but islam!

OMG!!! relating nazzism to radical islam meant im starting out some sort of christian propaganda?

And you don´t see anything wrong with you trying to relate the Nazzi salute to the Catholic Pope? (i´m not even Catholic... )

on nazzism´s influence to radical islam/muslim.... i will post it in another thread. but I AM NOT starting out any sort of propaganda.

lol so why are there Muslim, Christians, Pagans, Atheists and many more in the US and EU army if its only purose is to bring God to pagans? lol And why has the Church condemned that war? And yeah, although he is head of the army he´s also a dick. He said many a foolish thing but yet I havent seen crosses on the falgs they carried into Iraq, just Stars and Stripes. Can it be we´re on to a new religion? Nah, sorry, this is a religion as old as the hills - it´s called MONEY.

But go on Tami, do believe in a global Christian crusade lol Foam at the mouth, stamp your food but you won´t change it - it´s about money not religion. Plus, US is constitutionally a secular country, isn´t it? There´s freedom of belief there. There are mosques, synagogues and churches next to each other and yet, when they go on war because their foreign politics is aggressive you claim it´s a religious thing. How logical! lol

I think there is a difference between referring to all christians as crusaders and implying (even jokingly) that someone could be a terrorist so I will delete the comment.

I never said all christians are crusaders, I just quoted Bush that the American army is crusading in Iraq.

That`s what Bush says not me!

Ahh well that is where you and me differ than.  I am always happy to "associate" with people of all views, its a good way to learn.  I was not on either side of your silly argument, but even if I was, it would not prevent me from being friendly with any of you ...

The only "racism" I see is coming from you

Nevermind eh?

I dont think you can show one post, one single post from me and say that ´this is racism´!!

Nothing is stopping you being friendly with any body..It is a personal choice and freedom..lol

Personally I would not put myself with the racists and nationalists on the same line.

It is not my cup of tea..

OK !  Muslims v Christians section of this thread is now OVER!!

Calling all Church of the Latter Day Saints and Scientology members for the next bout - come on in - don´t be shy - I know there must be some of you out there

Sorry LIR. No CotLDS or Scientology for me. Nor: any of the about 400 different Christian groups, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, Confucianism, Jajaism, Baha´i, Zoroastroism, Paganism, Sufism, Osho. The only religion I like a bit - but not enough to convert - is Shintoism: there is a god in everything you see including yourself.

Not quite sure who I would award it too, the competition is quite strong, perhaps we should have a TC vote for the best insulter {#lang_emotions_unsure}

I didn´t think there was anything worth an award in this thread!  Persnal insult level was minimal I thought.

Yes there are. But I think there are more Turkish Christians who do not say it openly...

You are only making assumption i think and you base your argument only to the events in Malatya. Generalizing is not good by basing your arguments only meeting up a few Turk christian converts and that event. If some bigots killed missionaries in Malatya, does not mean Turk christian converts cannot say their belief openly. Same happens to muslim families in Germany, does this mean there is no freedom of religion in Europe?

Do you really think a Turkish man who marries a foreign woman become westerner? who taught this to you or just what you dream when you married your Turkish dudu (i know im talking nonsense comments but im really confused how to reply this post )

she made that comment to the fact that you said there are no christians who are ethnically Turks...

I think tami was talking about Anatolia not the whole Turkic world. Of course there are christian Turks as well as from other religions.

Quoting justinetime

but when i was thinking last night.. isn´t Ephesus, a major part of the whole Christian movement? which leads me to believe that there was a time in history where there are Christians who are "ethnically Turks"... i just don´t know what happened through the course of time, that changed the belief of those people in that particular region to Islam...

Another absurd comment unfortunately, justin sometimes silence is better or should i say instead of thinking last night, why didnt you do a little research? It seems you have internet .

Let me add one to this , "i was thinking deeply last night, Ephesus was a part of a whole pagan movement, what happened to that people that changed their belief into christianity?" Or one more " the whole American continent was once pagan and shaman, what happened to that people that changed their belief into christianity?"

whats the radical islam´s btw? And another question where is this influence for about 64 years? Have they just noticed that Hitler influenced from so-called radical islam? I think they researched and found the relation after 2001, voila radical muslim(influenced) Hitler killed all the jews. Simply absurd. I think we discussed this before, why you putting all the blame on Islam whereas that terrorists only using Islam, actually they have nothing to do with Islam, all were trained by US against USSR during the cold war. If you put all blame on Islam, for sure someone will come with the same thing, putting all blame onto christianity...

First of lying is a sin in every religion I think.

Secondly, lying with an idea in the mind that ´ I am protecting my contry´s reputation´ is a betrayal for your own country..Because those lies are one of the reasons ´why we are advancing so slowly in the way of democracy and form of life´.

If I go to Turkey and say that I am converted to Christianity I will be refused by some of my friends (because most them are like me). I will be refused by my entire relatives.. (I dont think my own family will refuse me)

If anybody says the other way, it is a lie..

You will be treated as if you  betrayed your country (despite the fact that we are secular) You will be called ´gavur, dinsiz´ etc. If you are a female you might  be treated as a sex object only. They will keep talking about that they converted you with money etc.

Our country is the country sometimes where people are beaten up because they eat or drink during ramadan. Most of them will argue with you that you are insulting their religion because you are not fasting and declaring it openly by eating. You only can imagine what happens if you say you are a converted christian.

Portraying it the other way is comical.

Here is a list for you covering last several years about the incidents happened to Christians in Turkey.

http://cumhuriyetforum.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=10262

I am not going to translate it but bombings of churches/threatening people and some killings (I think they were behaded) are all in that list..

So it is better if we dont lie to ourselves..

It is always better if we live with less lies..

btw..I am not talking about people coming to Turkey as christians and living there as they are..I am talking about the converts here..

Firstly i have to remind you that slandering is another a sin. I only said there i think one can openly say that he/she converted into christianity, he/she was protected by laws hence nobody has right to kill him/her. and the other stages are simply normal about the relationships with your family and friends. Dont you think same things happen when a devout catholic parents´ child for instance converted into Islam?

btw you can also find many people not only converts who do not fast or pray, and nobody calls them like the way you described(but now im nt sure since AKP governing the country that you always praise ). Other awful events you selected with tweezers, can also happen in any country due to lack of respect to freedom of religion. It seems an avarage 10 events happen in a year, other countries needs to be checked also. Noone should approve these events in Turkey except the bigots...

yes... a nonsense comment, hehehehe.... because i didn´t say that Someone who marries a foreign woman, NEEDS to be westernized. that came from you. {#lang_emotions_lol_fast}

There are some Turkish people who have adapted western culture, whether they are married to one or not. And by adapting western culture, i mean Turkish people who don´t practice conservative Turkish traditions or values, because of the influence of modern values...  one example i´m aware of...is i know of some Turk people who were not practicing Ramazan anymore. There are plenty other examples, read other posts. If you don´t want to, then ok...

No, i don´t think a Turkish man who marries a foreign woman becomes a westerner. duh... lol... A lot of the younger population of Turkey is adapting to modern values or practices of western culture, and that doesn´t make them a ´westerner´ either. (why do some people have a negative reaction to the word "west? "  lol.. )

Nobody taught this to me, it´s just a personal observation... (corrections are accepted... )

It is not my dream either when i´m married to my Turkish dudu... {#lang_emotions_lol_fast} Should i take this as an insult? your making generalizations about me, don´t you think? Pretty hypocritical for someone who is accusing another person for making generalizations too.... lol...

Dont be subdued about saying ´radical islam´.

When some people ie Taliban read Kuran and follows exactly what it says (hand choppings etc), what they practice  can be generically refered as ´radical islam´..

The other version  is called as ´soft one´ in which they ommit some parts. lol

Oh well done TheH - you managed to offend and inflame the thread all over again.... which of the very many versions of the Quran did you read to be so knowledgeable?

From what I can see, people see what they want, in both the Bible and the Quran.  Men use both religions to distort and use them to their advantage.

I think there are VERY few people that speak a non-native language like a native speaker.    There are always subtle parts to a language that are only really understood by true native speakers.

It is the story of Abraham/Ibrahim preparing to sacrifice his son, Isaac etc.
I believe We are more moral than the prophets of old times.  Today, Abraham/Ibrahim would be locked up for child abuse.
Childeren might be traumatized by this story. So it is better it was not told at all.

True. I may have master´s degree in English, know more than an average native speaker of English about historical grammar and linguistics, drop my Rs, use a glottal stop instead of T to the point that Irish folks think I´m British and still I´ll never master English like a native

It´s from the Bible as well. I never liked it, it shows that if you hear voices and see burning bushes you should sacrifice your children without hesitation. They didn´t have psychiatrists back then...

Ýsaac is not Ýsmail, they are 2 different persons

And 2 different believes!

Ýn Ýslam we believe it was Ýsmail, and in Christianity, you believe it was Ýssac

So its not same to say that the story was about Ýssac when we are talking from Muslims point of view

Ýn your example,Ýsa is Jesus...that is same person,so it makes sense of course to say Jesus instead of Ýsa, no problem, and wont change anything.

No he wasn´t ´far away from being correct´ he just used the name that English speakers would be familiar with.  Teaschip´s link shows there is some dispute between the Koran and the Bible about the name of the child but we were taught Isaac - the legitimate son of Abraham.

You are making the same mistake I made this morning before I corrected my post.

Christianity  - Ismail

Islam           - Ishmael

Christianity - Isaac

Islam          - Ishaq

There were 2 sons and Ismail isn´t the Muslim name for Isaac.

There seems to be a difference of opinion as to which of the two sons Abraham/Ibrahim was prepared to sacrifice.  It depends which faith one follows.

Whichever son it was, I guess the message is the same.

I won´t bother posting a link because for every link that argues it was Ismail/Ishmael there´s one that argues it was Isaac/Ishaq.

Ummm...actually there are two sons and two wives (all legitimate). The first son was from Hagar and he was Ismael. The second son was Isaac and he was from Sarah aka Sarai.

Ishmael was the first born and legitimate son of Abraham through Hagar. Later Sarah gave birth to another legitimate son, Isaac.

There is no disbute as to the fact that Ishmael was the first born, the dispute is as to who was offered as sacrifice.

its indeed a story, but written down by some people long time ago and was copied for many times and preserved, it can be trusted since bible is the same since thousands years, can be proved by qumran dead sea scrolls.

and its definetly isaak the legitamte son of abraham not ishmael. hagar was never married to abraham, she was departed to a wilderness to become a separate nation.

But it´s only a story - so who really knows?

There is no dispute that Ismael was the first born son of Abraham. As to weather Hagar was a wife or concubine.....

"And Sarai Abram´s wife took Hagar the Egyptian, her handmaid, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to Abram her husband to be his wife. "

The Hebrew partiarchs were not monogamous. Soloman was said to have had over 500 wives and 300 concubines.

If one considers Hagar as a wife or concubine actually is not relevant as to the status of the legitimacy of Ismael. Children of concubines were considered legitimate.

Monogamy was a Roman custom that was brought into Christianity. Look it up. I´m not defending these practices, but these are the historic facts of the matter.

In a sense, the rivaly between the decendants of Isaac (Jews) and Ismael (Muslims) could be said to have begun with the rivaly between these two women. After Hagar had a son, Sara was very jealous. When she finally had a son, she cast Hagar and her son out into the desert.

But, under any interpretation of events, Ismael was still the first legitimate son of Abraham.

What we know about Hagar RA that she was an Egyptian princess who were captured by the king of Egypt ´not Pharaoh´ on that time, took her as a slave and he wanted to add her as his mistresses but she refused being one,so he gave her as a present to Sara SA which he thought was Ýbrahim´s sister.

That story´s references were added together from both religious books and history, our Egyptian history.

On that time Egypt was invaded by Hyksos and under their authority.

Thats why in Qur´an when telling this story ALLAH dont refer to the king by the name Pharaoh which is the old Egyptian title for the king, but HE just said ´the king´ because he was one of the invaders not a Pharaoh ´who must be Egyptian´.

Although when refering to Musa ´Moses´ HZ HE said ´The Pharaoh´ and not ´The king´ because on that time Egypt was ruled by Pharaohs ´Egyptians´ and not others.

Sry for the history lesson now, just thought to share the information, also not many Muslims know it,unless they read or know the Egyptian history too to get the difference.

 Never been to a laundramat?{#lang_emotions_unsure}  I´ll give you a visual....from my perspective.  Lis may correct me.  Ok...your washer or dryer has gone out in your house...damn I have to go to the laundramat.  I need to make sure I have enough change..lots of quarters.  Ok...I get there park my car, walk in one basket at a time hoping no one steals anything when I go back to get another basket, kids running everywhere, hotter than hell, mexican guy is staring at me, start to read magazine.  20 minutes later throw my cloths into dryer...trying to find a place to fold them.  Damn it forgot hangers..fold what I can and load my car, telling myself I can´t wait to get my dryer or washer fixed. The day at a laundramat.{#lang_emotions_bigsmile}

ahaha, interesting, i dont think we have them

the washer gone? in that case i think we go to neighbours or friends/family. i dont know. i personally never had my washer broke.  what comes to my mind is, if above case doesnt work i would put the laundry into the huge bucket pour some powder and hot water and leave for a day stirring it time to time by a hanger. done!

This is just about right.  I remember when I had my first apartment.  I was 19 and going to university.  There was no washer or dryer and I was forced to go the laundramat!  It´s not really fun but you see all kinds of people!  Sometimes that in itself can be entertaining!

Same for me during my college time. Only in most Dutch laundramats there are no people waiting, you put your stuff in the machine and go away for shopping or so, coming back in 1,5 hours (these large machines here aren´t too fast!). Last time I used a laundramat was on holiday in Gaziantep in Turkey while backpacking for 5 weeks. It took me quite some effort to find one. People were almost insulted when I asked them where I could find one ´Do you think we are poor? We all have a washing machine at home!´ And during my previous trips in Japan I used sometimes the ´koin randori´ where smiling women take over your stuff before you can say a word!

 again, its a pride. we are so proud. thats in our blood. theres nothing we have invented or contributed to the humankind except for our genes but nevermind, we are still very very proud. proud of what? of our own pride eh what a mess! {#lang_emotions_head_bang}

i remember i put my grnadma´s dress of a dark colour into a washer together with other dark color trousers and socks. my grandma was in shock and was greatly offended. after that she separately washed her clothes by hands.
