After looking on this site...everywhere...and only seeinga thread that Miss Ceyda started...without much success of an answer...I am curious as to what the educational system is like in Turkey re: what classes are mandatory (ie second language), until what age must you go to school, are there different schools for the various academic levels of the students after a certain grade like in Germany or is it the same school only different classes as in USA? Anybody have any "real" information to give us?

I can tell you something about applying to Uni, since a colleague of mine explained it to me. I'm not sure if it accounts for every uni in Turkey, but anyway..

She told me that if you want to apply for uni, you can't pick any course you'd like. You have to take a test first, and according to the points you get for it, you have a choice between some courses.

Another thing someone told me is that in Turkey as a student you're not allowed to have a part-time job (or.. there aren't any part-time jobs?)

Funny that's it's completely different from Holland!
And please correct me if I'm wrong...

As a foreign student you have to take the YÖS exam. According to your results, you get to choose from different universities/courses. Not every university accepts foreign students, but i think nowadays many of them do.
Google YÖS and you'll definitely find lots of information. Without this YÖS you can't enter university, though I have read that some highscool-diplomas from soem countries (i think Germany and USA are in that list are allowed as an equivalent to those.

It's true that when you have the foreign-student-status, you are not allowed to have a part-time job. But this also wouldn't pay off. Working part-time in a restaurant, will definitey not help you much in paying your rent.

I think that you want information on secondary education though. I'm afraid I cannot help you much with it, but it's different and less various from German and American education-system.

there is a few types of high school in my country..

Science
Anatolian(doesnt mean that they are in Anatolia lol)
Normal
Industrial and Profession
and Private

i dont know if i forget the other types..

i am graduated from an Anatolian High which meant that they give education in english in some courses science actually and which means they have big english department as some universities dont have

After elementary school you attend to an examination as OSS which is called OKS then according to your degree you attend these ones Science is the higher ones and some private schools scholar as Robert Collage( you can check this one i think its the only one that has a website in English )
and then you have 4 years maybe 5 up to the lycee (smells francais ) you attend in high schools. there is standards in education.. but you know nothing is on the level of ideal state upper or lower

Well, for instance..in Germany..after the 4th grade, depending on how well you do, you either go to the lower educational, middle educational or higher educational school. The lower being those trained for i.e. trash men, the middle for bank workers and higher are preped for college/university.

In the USA, everyone goes thorugh the 8th grade then in the 9th grade you are guided tiwards what you will likely do "when you grow up". Everyone goes to a high school though. it is just a matter of if you are in the higher level classes, middle/average level or lower level classes. When all is said and done, they can all go to college, but it is a matter of how well you were prepared for it in the 9-12th year of school. What about in Turkey, what is the set-up there?

Does this explain it better? i hope so...
