The mayor of a thriving town in northern Italy has banned the wearing of face-concealing veils by Muslims. It is believed to be the first time such a step has been taken in Europe.
Officially, Enzo Bortolotti has merely forbidden the concealment of people´s faces in the town of Azzano Decimo (population 13,00, for reasons of "public safety" in the light of the international terrorism threat.
The ban technically includes the wearing of a motorcycle helmet when not riding. But there is little doubt that the real purpose of the mayor, who is a member of the xenophobic Northern League, is to strike at a symbol of an "alien culture" now taking root in his wealthy town.
Azzano Decimo has a small but rapidly growing immigrant population from South Asia and North Africa. The mayor openly states that he sees this as a threat to local traditions.

He isn´t the first. Dutch law for years says that covered faces in public are forbidden, including ski masks, helmets, carnival masks so burka/chador/niqaab (never know which one is it) also. Only thing is that nobody cares about that law, motorbikers with helmets on go shopping, part animals walk around town with masks in February, bank robbers wear ski masks (...) and some women there veils.

I think it´s a sensible ban - it bans just those veils that cover the face, right? You may still wear a headscarf. Nowadays crime rate is quite big so no wonder that face should be revealed. How do you know that a criminal is not using disguise to cover his/her face otherwise? It´s the same in London, I recall hoodies there are forbidden in public places.
I recently needed info about passport photos for Polish citizens and exemplary photos show that although a photo with your neck and hair covered is acceptable, you cannot cover your face (quite logical)

but we (including you) all know that this ban has nothing to do with security. the mayor is told to be a well known nazi.

Possibly you might be right about racist mayor..
But how can any mayor ban "concealing the face in public" without being critisized inthis context?
If I was the mayor, you could say the same thing to me too: ´Thehandsom´s aim is to strike at a symbol´.
If the mayor was you, ´other tamikidakikaS´ would say exactly the same thing to you..

The underlying motives are not that important if the outcome is sensible, logical and necessary. If somebody doesn´t like it, they can seek home in a more "tolerant" country like Albania
