A study conducted by the Ankara-based Association of Young Businessmen (ANGÝAD) suggests that women residents of the nation´s capital are largely dissatisfied with their lives.

On occasion of tomorrow´s International Women´s Day, ANGÝAD polled 1,397 female Ankara residents between the ages of 18 and 60 as part of the "Being a Woman in Ankara" study. Only 15 percent of participants could describe themselves as "a happy woman," while 40 percent said that they had been subjected to violence. Fifty-seven percent of participants were married, 32.4 worked a paying job, 21.5 percent were housewives, 14.9 percent were unemployed and 10.3 percent were retired. One of the questions asked during interviews for the study was, "Does the March 8 International Women´s Day mean anything to you?" -- 64.1 percent of respondents said no. According to the study, 72.9 percent of Ankara´s women are unhappy with their current conditions, while 75.1 percent are pessimistic about what the future holds.

Asked about the biggest problem they faced, 31.1 percent of the women cited trying to get by financially, while 14.1 percent complained of a lack of economic independence. Other issues faced by the women include women being controlled by men and discrimination, problems related to children, violence, abuse, under-education, the inability to take a vacation from responsibilities, not being in control of their own lives and being unable to meet their own clothing and personal expenses. Sixty-five percent of participants described themselves as troubled, while 15.3 percent said they were happy women. Out of those who identified themselves as troubled, one in four said it was because they couldn´t solve their financial problems, and one in five said it was because they were unable to meet their life goals.

Women aren´t valued in Turkey, 62.9 percent of respondents said, while 64.5 percent said that gender equality was nonexistent in all fields. Forty percent of the women said they had been targets of violence -- and 27.1 percent declined to answer this question. Out of the women who said they faced violence, 60 percent said it was perpetrated by a family member, and 27.5 percent said from a husband.

Trudy, it seems to be a human condition to be dissatisfied with one´s condition. We are driven as a species to constantly "improve" our condition.

For some, having a billion dollars isn´t enough...they want more.

Being thankful for what we have seems to be rare.

I think this says it all... Great study, and I am happy to see such studies being done, at least that means that women´s issues are not completely under the carpet. I am also very happy to see that these women are aware that they deserve better and have the courage to say that they are unhappy with what they have. Often times, because a person is not aware of what she/he could/should have, they say that they are happy with whatever position they are limited to, like being controlled by a spouse at home.

I only hope that something can improve in this area and it doesn´t end on talking..

femmerous dear, I put you on the ignore, I did not mark your PMs as spam. The only reason I put you on ignore is because I don´t like finding insults in my PMs. If you were polite it would have been a different matter.

By the way, I noticed 8 of your messages today had something to do with me in them. Are you obsessed with me? If I´ve hurt your feelings, I truly am sorry.

You must admit now, opening my private messages to find myself being called a hypocrite and snake it a abut much now, don´t you? It´s enough I have to endure this in the public forum.

Hmmm... I have to admit my attention was got by the impulsive posts... I have also read the original article.

Alameda, I think I disagree with your post - and opinion.

For eg., reporting violence can not attire thankfulness!

Your comparation is not the most suitable - because greediness is one thing, but to wish different (more peacefull, replenishing) life conditions is different. Of course, this is a wise saying, being thankful for what we got, only it has it´s own meaning. There are wise sayings for domestical violence, too.

And I can come with a parabola, which you may know, also - it is Plato´s parabola with peoples sitting at a tourchlight in caves - they are happy until they discover surface light.... So evolution is a tendency towards "better quality light".

I may understand here a wish to protect a society... true, yet, I was never able to protect injutice, or bad allocation of resources, neglect, unhappiness. I , in my ways, try to do soemthing anagainst these - I am sure that you, in your ways try the same.

And oh, yes, where I live(Romania), we can come with many similarities regarding women "rights" (a term I disagree with, it is reflecting like women have no rights - question of nuance)....

As for my beliefs, you do not know me and have no idea of who I am. You don´t know if I´m female or male, a US citizen or an immigrant...or just visiting.

I´d hate to disappoint you but none of frequent TC users is that anonymous - we all share doses of privacy every now and then. We know you are a woman, we know you have a few niquabs, love nargile, live or lived in the NY, you´re still attractive to sexual maniacs on the tube, learnt how to make dresses from your grandmother who´d made them for famous people...it also shows you´re not a teenager as your opinions, whether one agrees with them or not, are balanced and well-thought...see, you´re not a stranger (don´t worry, we won´t tell anyone )
