"For women, it is difficult to participate in politics in Turkey; there are many obstacles. Women are stuck beneath a glass ceiling. When it comes to local politics, it is even harder for women," said Ýlknur Üstün, chairperson of the Ankara branch of the Association for Education and Supporting Women Candidates (KA-DER).

Üstün has a point -- only two of the 81 metropolitan municipalities will be run by women mayors over the next five years. Of a total of 923 district municipalities, 15 of them will have women mayors. There are many small towns in Turkey, but only four of them will have women mayors.

Even the number of women candidates nominated for the local elections was low: 18 from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party), 34 from the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), 45 from the Republican People´s Party (CHP), nine from the Felicity Party (SP), five from the Grand Unity Party (BBP), 33 from the Democratic Society Party (DTP), 37 from the Communist Party of Turkey (TKP), three from the Freedom and Solidarity Party (ÖDP), 37 from the Democrat Party (DP) and 52 from the Democratic Left Party (DSP). But from the very beginning, most of these women were not in a position to be elected.

A pity, Turkey is one of the few countries that had a female prime minister, a fact to be proud of! Now more women in local politics too please!

That female prime minister may well be the single most important reason why Turks  now try to keep their ladies in the kitchen; they learned from experience.

So she wasn´t a success according to you? And then THE solution for the future is that ´women are kept in the kitchen´. Hmmm, what then to do when a man/ men is/are not a success? Sending back to their caves?

No, the next obvious step is to send those ladies unhappy in the kitchen, back to the caves....We want happy ladies in our kitchens.

And you and your posts might as well be the single best reason why Turkey should not join the EU. Scared

Better get yourself one of the EU fans in Turkey. I think Turkey should steer right out of EU.

One of the most unpopular British prime ministers in my lifetime was Margaret Thatcher. She was ruthless and earned the nickname "The Iron Lady". She was probably more unpopular with women than men but I personally thought she did a good job. I´m with Alpha , Turkey is a great country and should avoid the EU like a plague. I don´t want to enter the kitchen sink arguement. Scared

2 jokjes that might appeal to you

why are women´s feet smaller than men´s? So they can get closer to the sink!!!

Why do women get married in white? I thought all kitchen appliances came in white!!

Hopefully I am not going to be slaughtered for these. What the hell! I may be a 21st century woman but I still have a sense of humour and these made me laugh!!!
