June 14th is World Blood Donor Day.

According to the American Association of Blood Banks only 37% of the US population is eligible to donate blood.  Current trending shows that less than 10% of those who are eligible actually donate.  Considering the need, that number is far too low!  In the US alone, approximately 40,000 units of red blood cells are transfused EVERY DAY.

Did you know –

  • A premature baby could be saved with only 3 small teaspoons of blood?

  • If you and a group of 20 friends get together and donate you could help one burn victim?

  • Blood only has a shelf life of 42 days.  After that, it must be disposed of?

  • The actual procedure takes only about 10 – 15 minutes?

Blood or blood products are needed for trauma victims, burn victims, cancer patients, transplant patients, surgical patients and more.  You never know who is going to need blood.  It might be you………..or a loved one.

Please go to your local donor center on Sunday and give blood and then go back every 8 weeks!  Make a habit of saving lives!

I was a blood donor for many years but I´m not allowed to give anymore due to a history of medication that has left tracks or something like that. Funny, just last week I was explaining to my students what an organ/blood donor was and except one (he´s a Jehova Witness) all were in favour but none of them actually did give blood or carried a paper saying ´I´m an organ donor´. I´ve heard once that for Muslims being an organ donor is not allowed because then you´re not ´whole´ anymore. Is that true? Does that mean that in countries with mostly Muslims organ transplants are rare? Anyone who knows this?

there is a writing the back side of my driving licence " i donate my tissues and organs for the other ills to medical tratment after my life end medically "  and i did approve it when i took my driving licence many years ago.

so its not forbidden , its just a choice.. maybe some people can think they will need their organs after they die , i dont know ..

Great post GG.....Blood donation always goes down during the summer months in the US.  As a healthcare worker, it seems like a very cruel irony to me because so many people are out and about in the summer, so this is when most trauma´s occur.  So PLEASE, if you are able and willing, PLEASE donate!

I will be giving blood on Tuesday (16th I think).  I am going to take part in a medical research programme run through the University of Cambridge.

I agree with all of the above having had to receive 5 pints of blood when I had my first child.  So I am very aware of the need to give back what I took.  I have given over 20 pints now, so paid back plus some Big smile

Oh - I gave blood in the UK from the age of 19 so lord knows how many pints I gave before I left 2 years ago!  I got a couple of badges but I gave up counting.   I have quite a rare blood group so I really did feel I was doing some good .  No idea where I should go now I´m in Turkey though   - I must ask at the local hospital.
