The fact that the Aegean town of Bodrum is misrepresented by being shown as a desert in the Canadian film titled “The Last Templar,” caused harsh reactions of Turkish non-governmental organizations.

“This is a shame of Americans. Turkey’s most important tourism destination, which is a also a member of the World’s Best Coves’ Union for its blue coves and heaven-like forests, Bodrum is shown as a desert in the film. This is caused by ignorance or evil purpose. We will ask the union’s Canadian and French members and warn the film’s director and company to correct this mistake,” said Bodrum local Galip Gür, who is the vice chairman of the World’s Best Coves’ Union.

Some parts of the film, starring the Oscar winner actress Mira Sorvino, was shot in Afghanistan deserts but it was shown as Bodrum. Bodrum Mayor Mehmet Kocadon said camel caravans and deserts were seen in the film´s scenes that are supposed to set in Bodrum.

Kocadon mentioned that they joined many international tourism fairs to promote Bodrum every year, adding, “Also, we host some 2,000 journalists and filmmakers in the district. We will do our best to correct this mistake in the international platform. It is not important the number of viewers of the film. It is important that this district is misrepresented to the world.”

In the film, four horsemen dressed as 12th century knights storm the gala opening of an exhibition of Vatican treasures at the New York Metropolitan Museum and steal an arcane medieval decoder. Archaeologist Tess Chaykin (Mira Sorvino) and FBI agent Sean Reilly (Scott Foley) engage in a chase across three continents in search of the enemy and the lost secret of the Knights Templar.

This seems like an evil purpose if they, who generally have no idea of World map, can spot Bodrum in planet earth.

I too find it annoying when the movies are not accurate in terms of historical or geographical facts. It seems to be the case with some movies that are made to provide entertainment value only. For me the "Gladiator" is a movie like that, which is so far off in terms of historical accuracy that it´s just difficult to watch.

I´m not sure how it´s "evil" though. Maybe it´s just ignorance of the writer, lack of a good historical consultant, or a deliberate change of set to make the story more workable.

Braveheart is another great example and has been called the most historically inaccurate film ever made about the UK lol

However, people love it because we English are made out to be EVEN WORSE than we are! lol

lol

I found a list of 10 most inaccurate movies and both of them made it. Interestingly enough Mel Gibson seems to be a common thread in some of them.

I thought it was all true and as a punishment I think we should take all our politicians back north of the border and leave the English to govern themselves. Rant

How can a Canadian film be the shame of Americans?  Are you being historically inaccurate?  or just enjoying your daily jab at Americans?

Recent survey by Christian media shows that a great percentage of Americans don´t know where Turkey is and those who do hate Turks anyway.

Bodrum IS in Turkey, isn´t it? Unsure
