Reading about a recent car accident in Poland where a drunk nineteen-year-old without driver´s licence killed 3 siblings in a hit-an-run I began to wonder what driving laws there are in different countries.

In Poland you need to be 18 to get a driving licence, you need a test on theory and practice so, basically, nobody lets you drive unless you prove that you can. Speed limits in cities are 50km/h outside them 90km/h and motorways let you drive at 110km/h I think. The number of penalty points is 22 and they´re given for a year. If you caused an accident and committed a few offences, the points sum up. Drunk driving is considered not an offence but a crime and results in depriving you of the licence.

In general, Poles are terrible drivers because they love speeding, in a line of cars there´ll always be a few daredevils who´ll keep overtaking everybody else. And you may forget about road courtesy - don´t expect people to let you in or out a slip road

What about other countries?

In Turkey your driver licence is taken for 2 months when you reacy 100 points. Age and Speed things are the same in turkey..and Drivers are the same too... Terrible

In the States the laws vary by each state, so for example in Illinois you have to be either 16 and complete a driver´s ed course or 18 years old in order to get a license. Before that you can get a permit so you can practice driving with an adult licensed driver to learn how to drive. You have to pass a written test on the rules and a driving test. There´s really nothing to it. It´s not like I remember it being in Poland where people would have to take the test multimple times or bribe the examiner, in the States usually you would have to work hard at failing.

The speed limits vary by state. In IL the speed limit is 55 MPH (approx 88.5 KPH) on the highways and about 25-45 MPH (40-72 KPH) on road depending on whether it´s a residential area or not. In Florida, if I remember correctly, the speed limit was 70 MPH on the highway (approx 112.5 KPH).

The penalties vary by state as well. Sometimes you accumulate points, sometimes you have to go to traffic school, the fines vary as well - in some states you pay a set fine for speeding, in others it varies by the number of miles you were over the limit.
