If you are somewhat familiar with the language, watching movies with subtitles is one of the best ways to practice. Let's list here the Turkish movies you watched and liked, if there are any. I can list some of my favourites in different categories as follows:

Drama:
Uçurtmayı Vurmasınlar
Piyano Piyano Bacaksız
Eşkiya

Comedy:
Herşey Çok Güzel Olacak
Kibar Feyzo
Zübük
I couldn't watch GORA yet, but I am sure I will like it

Romantic:
Selvi Boylum Al Yazmalım
Im Juli (Turkish-German)

These are the ones I can remember now, I can add more later as I remember. I suggest watching these movies if you can get them without much trouble (Maybe except the comedy ones, since Turkish comedies are generally too cultural oriented and you may not understand the jokes if you are not in the culture).

Although until now I understand no or very little Turkish, I find Turkish television (TRT International overhere) very interesting, especially the children's programmes!

Even if you don't understand a word, you hear how the Turkish language is pronounced, and more important, how the language sounds, the intonation, how they emphasize and stress words for example. Are there rules for that by the way?

I didn't see that movie, Hamam but it was a pretty controversial movie in Turkey because of the picture of Turkey and Turkish people it draws. But I can't make a comment without seeing it first.

yeah i know it was very controversial in Turkey, I suppose it was cos it told a gay story.. but apart from that dont think it gives a bad impression of the turkish ppl at all, rather the contrary.
if u have the opportunity to watch it, just do it, it's one of my favs films.

'pascale's island' is definitely worth seeing. it's an older robert redford movie set in a pre-wwi greek island. the title character is a language teacher and turkish 'secret' agent. most of the movie is in english, but there are subtitled turkish parts. it's a poignent picture of a lost world.

Today I saw "Gegen Die Wand", in english "Head On", a turkish german co-production that won the best picture award in Berlin Cinema Festival last year.
I liked it but I just got home so I'm still thinking about it. It's a stonger movie than I though it would be.
Has anyone seen it?

Yes, I've also seen it. The turkish title is Duvara Karşı.
I like it much, especially the part taken place in Istanbul. I loved the music, the turkish band singing song which was a description of the plot with Istanbul in a background. I've heard many voices that the ending is not suitable to the whole move, but I disagree with it. It was the best of all possible endings. The movie went a little controversial as far I know.
Does anyone know where can I buy soundrack from this film???

looks like it's a very old movie - from 1977, and it's based on a book that won Lenin's award...

Babam ve oğlum.. You definitely have to watch this film. It ıs very touching and very sad but beautiful story.

Though we watched late and the film ended at 3.30 (I bought Kadir the DVD), I was too touched to sleep.

It ıs probably so touching because it is the story of many Turkish families..

I just finished watching 'Babam ve Oğlum' about an hour ago! Such a lovely film - so sad - but I really enjoyed it. The only other Turkish movie I have seen (so far) is 'Hacivat ve Karagöz neden öldürüldü' which I also enjoyed and have watched several times - understanding a little more each time I'm pleased to say. Both films recommended by TC members * çok teşekkurler!

BTW the Turkish title of the 'Mustafa' film is 'Mustafa Hakkinda Her şey' - directed by the same director as 'Babam ve Oğlum' I think.

Objectively speaking, I don't think that Babam ve Oglum is such a great movie (despite it's good points), I don't even think that it's the best Turkish movie. I haven't seen that many Turkish movies, and I am yet to see the best one . I used to watch Turkish movies more frequently and remember liking one, which for a change had less retarded and more mature and funny type of jokes and seemed to be less rude and primitive in sexual matters.
GORA was the first Turkish movie I've seen and I thought it was terrible, but then I'm not a Star Wars expert of fan, so that might have added to my liking.

There are not that many great movies out there anyways, but the best ones are - yes - American. Oh well, money and experience matter.

Well - as I said I've only watched 2 Turkish films so far but having watched a fair bit of Turkish television I dont think there is any point in rating either films or TV in comparison with American productions - or UK or European for that matter. Babam ve Öglum was on a par with a made for TV movie in the UK but I enjoyed it and it will hopefully help me with my Turkish. I have no expectations of a blockbuster movie from Turkey at this moment in time but welcome any more recommendations!

Actually I disagree. I prefer to watch low budget independent films - whatever country they are made in. I hate the way Hollywood change stories to improve ratings and, even worse, change facts in historical films for patriotic reasons or because they think people "like a happy ending". For some people its the only version of that piece of history that they see - and they believe the Hollywood hype!

For those who can come to Rotterdam: from January 24th until February 4th there will be the new edition of the IFFR (International Film Festival Rotterdam). Every year in more than 15 cinema's hundreds of films from all over the world, every year also Turkish films. Most low-budget, some long, some a few minutes, some documentary's. Absolutely worth visiting. There are package deals for a combi hotel-film; you can choose film by film or take a passe-partout. Cheap hostels are in town (if not booked out yet ). The complete programme will be available in January at http://www.filmfestivalrotterdam.com/default.aspx?liso=en-US

Movies I've seen so far and recommend:

* Hamam (Ferzan Özpetek)
* Karşı Pencere: the movie is in Italian. It stars the talented and dazzingly beautiful (the eyes!) actress Giovanna Mezzogiorno. Also directed by Ferzan Özpetek who lives in Italy.
* Duvara karşı (Gegen die Wand) directed by Fatih Akin
* Crossing the Bridge - The Sound of Istanbul (also by Fatih Akin)

Oh and for peopling buying DVD's: compare prices with the ones at Play. I noticed that most of the time they are the cheapest by far!
(no, I'm not affiliated whatsoever )

There are similar sites like the one you mention. The one I use never mentions results from Play, even if it's the cheapest. So it's always best not to trust completely on those comparing sites

Merhaba!
I own "Journey of Hope" and I absolutely love it. Very sad, though. I own one called "Pahlevan", I believe...it's a little tedious showing so much wresting, but it's great for language and culture learning. I've seen one called "Uzak", which was interesting, but kind of artsy and not very dramatic.

One good movie which is about Turkey in a roundabout way, is a French film called "Monsieur Ibrahim" with Omar Sharif. He plays a Turkish shop owner living in Paris, but towards the end of the film he and a young boy take a trip to Turkey. The film is very touching.

OK, once when I was in Turkey, I watched an old black & white Turkish movie on TV late one night. Of course it did not have subtitles, but the movie was hilarious! I didn't catch it from the beginning, but it seemed to be about an American woman who had gone to Turkey looking for her lost brother who was an astronaut of some sort(!?). She was going door to door looking for him, and a couple of Turkish men were helping her (and flirting with her). One of the men was married and his wife kept chewing him out for flirting. It was a comedy, and I would DEARLY love to find this movie and watch it. A lot of it was in English because of the American woman...the Turkish men were trying to speak English to her. The movie seemed to be from the 1960's, maybe early 70's, black & white. I didn't undertand any Turkish at the time and it was still funny to me...I imagine now that I know more, I'd like it even more! If anyone has any idea what movie this might be, please let me know!

çok teşekkür edirim!
~Rene
