Hi,

I am an asian and while I have heard that turks are very interested and welcoming of western foreigners, i was wondering what the common reaction to and perception of asian foreigners is?

Actually we are also interested in Asians. Turks have their roots in Asia so we are also Asian. Mongolians, Chinese, Japans and Koreans were our neighbours in the past. In fact our language is similar to Mongolian, Japanese and Korean for example and we have words borrowed from Chinese in our language from thousands of years ago.

They are all welcomed here.

We have some Turks with Asian looks. For example İlhan Mansız gained many Japanese female fans because of his looks, which was an important factor in his transfer to Vissel Kobe. How ´bout the late singer Barış Akarsu, doesn´t he look like an Asian?

Thanks Si that was a very sweet post.

But is that just your personal opinion or are there a number of racists in turkey?

In general you´ll be fine as an Asian person in Turkey. You´ll might get some "ching changs" as people try to make Chinese sounds, but that is just innocent. Perhaps you´ll also get more question about where you´re from, but you shouldn´t see this as racist or whatever. It is genuine interest in you as a person. If you travel alone as an Asian person you´ll be more of an oddity, which sparks this interest. East-Asian people tend to travel to Turkey in organized trips.

Oh, thanks!

That´s my personal opinion for sure but I think it´s also a general opinion.

I think Turkish people have warm feelings towards Korean and Japanese people. See this link for example for Turkish-Korean blood brothership.

There may have been some negative feelings towards Chinese recently because of the last year´s conflicts in Uyghur autonom region in China. But that doesn´t mean there would be racist acts towards them if they visit Turky.
