Söz = a verbal agreement between two families for a marriage, the first step

Nişan = a ceremony before wedding ceremony, the second step

Evlilik = wedding ceremony, the final step, seal the deal.

Due to financial reasons, "nişan" may have been skipped. And there may be a wedding ceremony after "söz", if agreed by two sides.

Usually one side (the girl´s family) organises the first ceremony and the the other second one. Again one side´s family buys the appliances for kitchen and living room and the other for the bedroom for example.

nişan means engagement. evlilik means marriage. söz is what you do before nişan. you "give your word" to the girl/boy that youre going to take them. söz is considered to be with the permission of the parents but it doesnt have to be so.

nişan is same as evlilik. it means you have "marked" your partner for marriage (usually with a ring or a red headband). if someone is nişanlı, it means theyre getting married. evlilik is the celebration and the announcement of it and making it official.
