The word for ´now´ is şimdi.
Artık means ´from now on´.
You can read some more here
The word ´now´ isn´t only bearing the meaning ´şimdi´ but you may also translate it as ´artık´ ,which is exemplified in the following:
Benz´s first car is now in a museum in Munich.
The baby can walk by himself now.
Focusing on the latter one specially,we can clearly see that the translation is better when translated as ´Bebek artık kendi kendine yürüyebiliyor´

artik as noun means left over, it has a different intonation than artik as an adverb.
ar-tık, noun, stress on the second syllable
ar-tık, adverb, stress on the first syllable
the noun artik derives from "artı"(plus, add, what is too much)
I guess I got it now, thank you

Well, actually,
artı dervies from art-mak verb so does artık:
artık = art-ık
artı = art-ı
When we had "artı" for plus we needed a word for minus as well and we had eksil-mek vs artmak. But instead of adding a suffix to eksil- similar to art- we tried to make it similar to artı and created "eksi" (minus) by dropping the last vowel of eksil- verb and that was a suggestion by Atatürk´s himself.
