Upper intermediate - advance plateau - how to keep progressing?

Hi all,

I was hoping to get some advice from people who have progressed to learning Turkish at a high level.. I have been learning for around one, one and a half years now, and have been doing quite well recently. I would place myself at the upper-intermediate level: I understand all tenses and almost all grammar constructions, and have a reasonable vocabular - I can talk quite basically about politics and unemployment, and can read a book for 12 year olds with looking at a dictionary maybe once per page.

However the last month I have really felt like I am stuck, at a plateau. I have been mainly teaching myself (one hour per week with a conversation tutor) and I´m not sure how to progress.. It´s very frustrating to be at a this point where I still can´t understand most television shows or movies (for spoken Turkish), and my reading skill is at a point where I am really just adding vocabularly which I am unlikely to encounter again for a long time.

How have other people in this position progressed - what worked for you? Watching lots of television, talking in chat rooms, reading literature with a dictionary word-by-word? It´s a very disheartening, and frustrating situation to be in.. i guess i need some motivation from people who have been here before!

Merhaba arkadaslar,

Sanirim orta seviyesinin ustindeyim.

Your Turkish text is quite good and can be understand easily. There are a few little mistakes. I tried to fix them.

My knowledge is far from yours, but I´m hoping to be as good as you in a year

My tips would be chat rooms, reading newspapers, finding friends who speak Turkish where you can participate. I don´t think you´re in Turkey, but maybe you can visit Turkey for a week now and then? Or is there a "Turkish Club" for Turkish people in your area?

Spending time at cafés or in the barber shop where lots of people talk all the time will help you (I´m planning to make my barber my teacher )

Apart from that, get a Turkish (e-mail) penpal. Maybe someone here would like to learn better English, so that the two of you can just talk about everything from the weather to politics... You correct the other person´s English, and he/she helps you with Turkish, everything you write is written in both English and Turkish.
