Can someone try and explain for me....

I am starting private Turish lessons on Saturday and would like to try and have a basic understanding to begin with.

Can someone explain the suffix '-yor' for me. I was told it is similar to the english suffix '-ing' but some of the pages here contradict that.

Also, if I wish to say "I am learning" I assume "ogrenyorum". However, if I wanted to say "I am learning Turkish" how would I say that???

Sorry if these seem silly questions but it can be difficult to understand fully without a good expanation!

Thanks

Laura x

Laura, firstly good luck with your lessons.

I have been trying to learn Turkish alone for 8 months. I just started having private lessons - I have had only 2, but they have taught me so much.

It is best to wait - your teacher will have a plan for you and if you wait and see what the plan is you will learn easily. There is no point in my opinion, trying to learn little things before you start, especially if you are starting on Saturday.

If your teacher is as good as mine, the lesson plans will start you in a logical place and each lesson will build upon the last. No point in jumping ahead.

The suffixes are complicated, but if you learn them in the right order they will be easy to learn, remember and understand. Don't worry about 'iyor' or anything else now, wati until Saturday. Well that's my advice anyway!

Kolay gelsin!
Lessons with natives are so much fun, especially when u try to repeat those loooooooong Turkish words. My tutor always laughs that what I say sounds like "Oh my God why are you doing it to me"
