Turkish champ Galatasaray starts new season with trophy

Galatasaray, aka the Lions, ended the 2011-12 on a high note by clinching the coveted Spor Toto Super League after outlasting Fenerbahçe at the end of last season in the inaugural (and now defunct) Super Final.

The Lions therefore will be starting the 2012-13 season, which kicks off this weekend, on a positive note after beating Fenerbahçe 3-2 in the TFF Super Cup at New Erzurum Stadium in the eastern city of Erzurum on Sunday night. Galatasaray last won the Super Cup in 2008 and Fenerbahçe in 2009.

The Super Cup is the traditional curtain-raiser to the new season between the domestic league champion and the Turkish Cup holder. Galatasaray is the reigning undisputed champion and Fenerbahçe, popularly called the Yellow Canaries, won the Turkish Cup last season -- for the first time in 29 years.

Sunday´s victory was made even sweeter for the Lions considering Galatasaray finished the game with 10 men after temperamental midfielder Engin Baytar was red-carded in the 66th minute.

For Fenerbahçe, it was a double tragedy because the team not only lost an important match, but also first-choice keeper Volkan Demirel was stretchered off the pitch with a dislocated shoulder.

Mother of all derbies

Any Galatasaray-Fenerbahçe clash -- dubbed the “mother of all derbies” by the local media -- irrespective of the sport or venue, is always not something for the faint-hearted. The Erzurum stadium was full to the brim hours before the match started and there were a considerable number of police officers in and around the stadium to maintain the peace.

Sunday´s Super Cup clash was of utmost importance for the coaches of both teams -- Fatih Terim of Galatasaray and Aykut Kocaman of Fenerbaçe. For the winner it would be a much-needed morale booster in the domestic league and European campaigns next season, and for the loser it would mean going back to the drawing board.

The match was particularly important for the Canaries, who will be playing Russian representative Spartak Moscow in the UEFA Champions League playoffs first leg match away on Aug. 21 and the return leg in Kadıköy on Aug. 29.

But on Sunday the Lions were the better and more organized side and it surprised no one that they won. After incredible misses by the Lions in the opening minutes, lanky striker Umut Bulut -- on a one-year loan from Ligue 1´s Toulouse -- broke the deadlock in 19th by heading home Galatasaray´s first goal.

Fener´s veteran captain and playmaker, the 30-something Alex de Souza, loves to score against Galatasaray. And Alex did exactly that on Sunday night, equalizing in the 45 + 2 minute when his shot from a free kick deflected off Galatasaray defender Semih Kaya into the back of the net.

Umut scored a brace in the 58th to give the Lions a 2-1 lead and a header goal by Fener´s Dutch new-signing Dirk Kuyt in the 65th gave the Canaries the equalizer again. An argument that ensued after that goal culminated in Galatasaray´s Engin seeing red.

Playing with a man less, the Lions were still far better than the Canaries and their incessant pressure earned them a penalty in the 88th when man of the match Umut was brought down in the Fener box by winger Caner Erkin.

Galatasaray midfielder and deadball specialist Selçuk İnan coolly converted the spot kick to seal the deal: Galatasaray 3, Fenerbahçe 2.

This match, as a matter of fact, gave the two coaches a chance to see their strengths and weaknesses. Galatasaray has acquired more quality players and so it was the Canaries who made more mistakes and lost, even though they played with a man advantage for over 30 minutes (including added time).

Coach Kocaman started with newcomers Egemen Korkmaz, Hasan Ali Kaldırım, Mehmet Topal (a former Galatasaray midfielder), Dirk Kuyt and brought in Milos Krasic as a late substitute. But the midfield was so ineffective that it posed little or no challenge to the Galatasaray attacking force.

“For us, this match was an opportunity to test ourselves and see where the flaws lie,” said Kocaman. “We will go home and really analyze this game and try to find out where we went wrong and then make the necessary amendments,” he stated.

Coach Fatih of Galatasaray started with four newcomers -- Dany Achille Nounkeu Tchounkeu, Hamit Altıntop, Umut and brought in Nordin Amrabat in the 69th after the Lions were reduced to 10 men.

This means the Galatasaray coach is still giving the new-signings time to get acclimatized to the team and they should be ready for the Kasımpaşa match in the league opener this weekend.

Czech defender Tomas Ujfalusi and Turkish goal king Burak Yılmaz were suspended on Sunday and so were not fielded. They should be ready by the time the league kicks off.

Terim, maybe, assumed everyone had watched the Super Cup and therefore was busy thanking everyone after the match rather than commenting on the game itself.

“I thank our opponents [Fenerbahçe] and I wish them a speedy recovery,” he said. “But it was only one team that was going to win. Many thanks to Erzurum, it turned out to be a very exciting match. I also thank my players [for a job well done]. And I am mightily happy if we made Chairman Ünal Aysal happy,” he noted.
