Merhaba herkese!
I´m new here and I have question for you guys.
I´ve been learning Turkish for the past two months and everything´s going great: I can read some simple text, I can point out most if not all grammatical structures (love grammar) and I´m just falling in love with the Turkish language more everyday.
But there is one hard part for me: vocabulary. Everytime I look a word up in the dictionary, I´m confronted with a long list of possible meanings for one word. I don´t know if I should take time out to learn the whole list out at once, or just learn the word in the specific context that I found it in.
What is your guys´ opinion?

learn the meaning in that sentence only. if you come accross the same word with a different meaning, than learn the second meaning at that time. learning all the meaning of a word at a time is not a good idea, even native speakers dont know them. good meanings comes from texts.
dictionaries sucks at that usage point. yes they give all possible known meaning but which one is more probable and and which one is used at what percentage. in olden times it was impossible to detect these but now there is an advanced computer technology exists to do that.
i think of producing a statistical dictionary of turkish, showing which words and meanings are more common at what percentage!

Çok teşekkür ederim ikicihan bey!
I´ll do it as you suggest; learning all the definitions would be impossible for me!
And I hope you become rich so that you could help all of us with that!

If you are ambitious and have the patience to study word lists it might be reasonable to concentrate on roots. Later when you gain more knowledge about word formation recognizing one word may suddenly mean being able to understand and use four or five derivated words.
This is a very useful list for hard working learners for instance:

What is good about learning languages is that you can do it in many ways. You can do it all wrong and still learn. So no worries as long as you give it an effort.

You may have already found the vocabulary section here at Turkish Class, vvaamim, but it has been very useful for me, especially the testing part. If you already know a good number of words, the tests help reinforce your memory. I do one level of testing until I can get 100% at least twice in a row, and then I move up a level. Each level adds new and more complicated words, so you also expand your vocabulary a bit each time.

i m Türk, and i m good at Turkish Grammer, İ love also Turkish grammer lesson. Becuase İ find Turkish language very logical, (Logic is also the lesson i like the most) and it is as maths.
İ got happy that you realised it. Because this shows you understood logic of Turkish. You do not memorize sentences but you are really learning. Some words are writen same but their roots are different,
yüz= 100 yüzüncü=100th yüzüncülük=100thness
yüz= face yüzsüz= cheeky (we say without face) yüzsüzlük=cheekiness
seninle konuşmaya yüzüm yok. i do not have face to speak to you.
yüz (mek)= (to) swim yüzme=swimming yüzücü=swimmer
yüzücülük =swimming (to work as swimmer)
in every dictionary of any languages, here lots of meanings. but if you are beginner your texts must be easy so words must be used mostly in their first meaning.
