Kutadgu Bilig is the first known written Turkish work after Turks accepted Islam. It was written by Yusuf Has Hacip in 1069. It was presented to Tabgaç Buğra Kara Khan. Kutadgu Bilig means "Knowledge of Being Blessed". The themes in the book are religion, philosophy, education, family, ethics, law, goverment, policy, army, sport, literature, mathematics, astronomy, health.... It is an allegorical work. There are four main characters. Küntogdı is ruler. He respresents true law. Aytoldı is visier. He represents happiness. Ögdülmiş is visier´s son. He represents reason. Ogdurmış is a religious man. He represents destiny. Kutdagu Bilig was written in mesnevi form. It is 6645 couplets. Now I read its translation in prose form prepared by Yaşar Çağbayır. It is published by Turkish Religious Affairs Foundation Publishing. I want to share some quotes from the book:

"Bilgili bey, öfkeyi kendinden uzak tut. Hiddetlenme de kendine iyi ad kazanmaya bak. Öfke ile yapılan işten her zaman pişmanlık doğar. Hiddetlenen insan işinde yanılır. Öfke ve gazap insana zarar verir, beden acı çeker. Öfke insanın aklını baştan alır. Hiddet bilgisini yitirir. Kişiye sükunet gerek, yumuşaklık gerek. Yöneticilere de parlak bir gelecek için sabır, yumuşak huy, nezaket, akıl ve bilgi gerekir."(1)

O wise ruler, keep anger away from yourself. Don´t get angry and try to earn a good name. The result of a deed done with anger is always regret. An angry man fails in what he does. Anger and rage harm people, body suffers. Anger takes your reason away. Furry makes you lose your wisdom. A person needs serenity and gentleness. Rulers need patience, mild temper, politeness, reason and wisdom for a bright future.

"Beyler kızdıkları zaman ateş ve zehir gibidirler. Eğer bir bey öfkeli ve hiddetli ise ey ağırbaşlı, sakin kişi onlara yakın durma. Onlardan uzak dur. Yoksa zararı dokunur."(2)

When rulers are angry, they are like fire and poison. If a ruler is angry and furious, o mild tempered and calm person, dont get close to them. Get away from them. Otherwise you will get hurt.

Ey kutluluk bulan kişi! Kutluluğun devamlı olmasını dilersen, sürekli iyilik et! Sana, devlet yöneticiliği gibi ulu bir adam olmak nasip olduğunda , bu kutluluğun hayatın boyunca devamını dilersen büyüklenme, kendini küçük say, mütevazi ol." (3)

O who found blessedness! If you want it to be continious, always do good deeds! When you are blessed with being a great man becoming a ruler, if you wish this blessedness continue during your life; never become arrogant, consider yourself small and be modest.

Kim erdem ile elini uzatırsa yüce dağlar bile başlarını eğer (sy. 107)

For whom gives his hand with virtue, even great mountains bow their heads.

Ülkeler kılıçla alınır, kalemle elde tutulur. (sy. 109)

Lands are taken by sword, but they are held by pencil.

İnsan iyiliğe karşı on iyilik yapar. (sy. 119)

People do ten favors in return of a one favor.

Yasa su, zulüm ise ateş gibidir. (sy. 123)

The law is like water, opression is like fire.

The door of a ruler is the door of peace. No injustice should be in front of it.

Bilgisiz kimse ibadetten bir sevap kazanamaz. (sy 129)

An ignorant person can´t gain any reward from God with his worshipping.

Yalnız ibadetine güvenen insan henüz Allah´ı memnun edecek yolu bulamamış demektir. Sen Allah´ın senden razı olmasını diliyorsan Müslümanların senden memnun olmasını sağlamalısın. (sy 130 ) *

A person who only trusts in his worshipping hasn´t yet found the way to please Allah. If you want to please Allah, you should first please Muslims.

İbadet ve taatte bulundum diye gururlanma. İbadete devam et, Allah´a ibadet eden insan azizdir. Namaz kıl, Allah´a kulluğun budur. Fakat ibadet ettim diye idrakini kaybetme. (sy 130 ) *

Dont feel proud becaue you worshipped. Keep on worshipping, a person who worships Allah is blessed. Perform the namaz, it is your duty to Allah. But dont lose your reason because you worshipped.
