Hi everybody I was wodering if anyone can explain for us the use of the word "ki" as i know that it can be used as "that" in english but i see it in  other places it has differnent meaning. I wish you can help me in this one.

ki is the most complicated conjunction in turkish... diye is after it too.

ok so here it is, "Ki" the most hated by turkish learning foreigners and a confusing conjuction, is used probably in 3 ways as i know...if not more

(i) Representations of direct speech:

- O gün Suzan bana de-miş-ti ki: “Artık dayan-a-m-ıyor-um”.

That day Suzan had said to me “I can’t bear [it] any longer”.’

- Bana genellikle deniyordu ki: “Sen küçüksün, gelemezsin”.

‘I was usually told “You’re too young; you can’t come”.’

(ii) Generalized sayings:

- Diyorlar [ki New York ağustosta çekilmez].

‘People say [(that) New York is unbearable in August].’

(iii) Thoughts and wishes:

- Ben diyorum [ki herkes kendi yiyeceklerini kendi getirsin].

‘I think [(that) everyone should bring their own food].’

"Ki" creates an emphasis... like "düşünüyorum ki" can be used in the beginning of a sentence meaning "what im thinking is...."

I used to be afraid to use "ki" before but it´s not so hard, you can use it as much as you want... but dont use it formally. ki is very informal

Explaining the use of ki is difficult. Many have tried. If you use the search box you will find plenty of good texts about it. In my opinion it is one of the things you learn perfectly only using your ear, i.e. listen a lot, read a lot and little by little your musical ear begins to catch the place of ki.

A long time ago I picked up a few sentences from a translation thread (they were produced by gokuyum and tunci as I remember). I translated them to my own native language in my mind and I think it helped me. You see, you often see ki together with öyle and I think this is one of its basic functions: it acts like a bridge from the circumstances to the results.

Şunu kesinlikle bilmiyorum ki, seni görmeden bu uzun kışın üstesinden nasıl geleceğim.

Seni görmeden bu uzun kışın üstesinden nasıl geleceğim ki bunu kesinlikle bilemiyorum.

Öyle ki, seni görmeden bu uzun kışın üstesinden nasıl geleceğim bunu kesinlikle bilmiyorum.

Burada öyle uzun bir kış var ki üstesinden seni görmeden nasıl gelebileceğimi kesinlikle bilmiyorum.

ki is not always seperate. There is a conjunction ki and suffix ki. You write conjunction ki seperate but suffix ki together.

Evdeki resim: Here ki makes adjective. The picture which is at home.

Seninki gelmedi. Here ki makes an possesive pronoun. Yours haven´t come.

In some cases  we can recognise  the conjunction  "ki"    attached to another  word[s]  and  it is  cliched by forming  new conjunctions. Such as ;

Hal +  bu   +  ki  ===>  Halbuki   ---> But, however,nevertheless, whereas

çün  + kü  ===> çünkü               ---> because

bel +  ki   ====>  belki                ---->  maybe, perhaps

o + ise +  ki  ====> oysaki          ---->  whereas, yet, however

san +  ki    ==>  sanki                  ----->  as if , seems like , it seems as if 

madem +  ki  ==>   mademki       ---->  now that, as, since

 etc…

1- Şunu kesinlikle bilmiyorum ki, seni görmeden bu uzun kışın üstesinden nasıl geleceğim.

I would say;  Şunu kesinlikle biliyorum ki, seni görmeden bu uzun kışın üstesinden nasıl (asla) gelemeyeceğim.

Or 1: Şunu kesinlikle biliyorum ki, seni görmeden bu uzun kışın üstesinden gelmem zor olacak.

Or 2: Seni görmeden bu uzun kışın üstesinden nasıl gelebilirim ki? Bunu kesinlike bilemiyorum. 

2- Seni görmeden bu uzun kışın üstesinden nasıl geleceğim ki bunu kesinlikle bilemiyorum.

I would say; Bilemiyorum ki bu uzun kışın üstesinden seni görmeden nasıl gelebilirim.

3-Öyle ki, seni görmeden bu uzun kışın üstesinden nasıl geleceğim bunu kesinlikle bilmiyorum.

Starting a sentence with öyle ki makes it sound incomplete. You must provide information before öyle ki. It connects two statements togather.

Like this:  Seni çok seviyorum, öyle ki bu uzun kışın üstesinden seni görmeden nasıl geleceği mi kesinlikle bilmiyorum (however; here for some reason ´bilemiyorum´ sounds better to me)

Info: Öyle ki is mostly used in mathemathical questions.

4-  Burada öyle uzun bir kış var ki, üstesinden seni görmeden nasıl gelebileceğimi kesinlikle bilmiyorum.

This one sounds ok but I would write it as follows to make it perfect: Burada kış öyle uzun oluyor ki, seni görmeden üstesinden nasıl gelebileceğimi kesinlikle bilmiyorum.  

Or: Burada öyle uzun bir kış oldu ki, seni görmeden üstesinden nasıl geldim bilmiyorum.
