" Tane " is a measure word meaning "grain". It is used with cardinal [bir tane, iki tane] and distributive numbers [ ikişer tane, üçer tane ]It emphasizes the"counting" meaning of the number and it can be dropped.

Bana bir [tane] ekmek verir misiniz ?

Ali´nin iki [tane] evi var.

Annem bize birer [tane] ayakkabı almış.

* The noun after "tane" can be dropped when we know it is obvious from the context. In other words, when the noun has already been mentioned;

- Burada çok kuş gördük. --->  We saw a lot of birds here.

 - Kaç tane [kuş] gördünüz ?  ----> How many [birds] have you seen ?

**********************

- Bende 2 tane bilet var.  ---> I have two tickets.

- Sende kaç tane [bilet ] var ? ---> How many [tickets] do you have ?

***********************

- Bir tane sigara verir misiniz ? ---> Could you give me one cigarette please ?

- Ben de bir tane [sigara] istiyorum.  ---> I want one too.

Ayakkabılar tane ile değil, çift olarak satılır. Annem bize birer çift ayakkabı almış.

 Just to point out for native English speakers:

remember as in Tunci´s examples, that unlike English, even if the number is two or more the word stays singular.

In English we say three flowers. But it isn´t üç çiçekler or üç taneler in Turkish. It is ü. çiçek (three flowers) or üç tane (three of them).
