Hi, I am reading a story and I have a translation question.  The sentence reads

Bu ülkenin kralının bir de oğulları varmiş.

Does that mean the king has one son or more than one son?  I am confused with the bir and then the -lar ending.

Thanks for your help!

"bir de" can also mean "also".

Bu ülkenin kralının bir de oğulları varmış. (The king of this country has also sons.)

=Bu ülkenin kralının oğulları da varmış.

oğul+lar(plural)---------------------->oğullar (sons)

oğullar+ı(possessive)----------------->oğulları (his/her sons)

oğul+ları(possessive)----------------->oğulları (1their son, 2their sons)

Even if it is normally unnecessary to use the possessive pronouns, it is certainly necessary in ambiguity situations so as to remove the ambiguity.

onun (his, her), onların (their)

onun oğlu (his/her son)

onun oğulları (his/her sons)

onların oğlu (their son)

onların oğulları (their sons)

kral+ın(genitive) oğul+ı(possessive)-------->kralın oğlu (the son of the king)

kral+ın(genitive) oğul+lar(plural)+ı(poss)---->kralın oğulları (the sons of the king)

kral+lar(plural)+ın(genitive) oğul+ları(poss)-->kralların oğulları (the sons of the kings)

kral+lar+ın oğul+ı(possessive)-------------->kralların oğlu (the son of the kings)
