Benden Öte Benden Ziyade

Merhabalar! Gokuyum suggested that I try to translate "Benden Öte Benden Ziyade." My attempt is below. But first, a couple of questions.

First, I have never seen apostrophes used this way before: "O´nu düşün o´na sığın." Could this be because the "O" is referring to Allah? In English, we would capitalize pronouns when they refer to God. "Let Him be praised." Could this be something similar? And then perhaps "it" should really be "He" in some spots?

Second, this line has me puzzled: "Orda öyle bir isim var ki." If I translate it literally, it doesn´t seem to make much sense. But then I found this in the dictionary:

isimi var, cismi yok. colloq.
1. He/She/It is much talked of but never seen.
2. It´s something imaginary.

The construction is not quite the same, because "isim" doesn´t have a final "i" on it here, but I still tried to use it.

And what does the song mean? Gokuyum said it is about "love, life, death, god, religion and mysticism." My knowledge of Islam is very basic, but here are my thoughts:

A man is locked away from his beloved, perhaps literally, perhaps figuratively. He is suffering. But he tells himself, and his beloved, to turn to the four books. Bu Kuran, değil mi? Here he finds solace in something greater than himself. Meditation gives him patience, gives him strength. It allows him to see his life as part of a greater whole. Part of Allah. And in this oneness, perhaps he is also with his beloved. ... Perhaps this is a Sufi-inspired song? The short, repetitive lines at the end make me think of the rotations of a dervish.

Teşekkürler!

Benden Ote Benden Ziyade -- Beyond Me, Greater Than Me
Bu akşam yine garip bir hüzün çöktü üstüme -- Again this evening a strange sadness has settled over me.
Hücrem soğuk bir tek sen varsın düşlerimde -- My cell is cold. Only you, let it be in my dreams.
Demir kapı yine kapandı ağır ağır üzerime -- Again the iron door has been closed slowly over me.
Kelepçeler yine vuruldu kilit kilit yüreğime -- Again the handcuffs have been closed fast around my heart.
Derin derin soluyorum seni gecelerce -- Night after night, I inhale you deeply.
Duvarlara kazıdım ismini her köşeye -- I scraped your name onto the walls, in every corner.
Dudakların şeker gibiydi -- Your lips were like candy,
Baldan öte baldan ziyade -- Beyond honey, greater than honey.
Pembe pembe yanakların -- Your cheeks so pink,
Gülden öte gülden ziyade -- Beyond a rose, greater than a rose.
Sabret gönül sabret -- Be patient, heart, be patient.
Sakın isyan etme -- Beware, don´t revolt.
Bir gün elbet bitecek bu çile -- Someday surely this suffering will end.
İsyan etme -- Do not revolt.
Dört kitaptan başlayalım istersen gel söze -- Let us start with the four books. If you wish, come to the word.
Orda öyle bir isim var ki -- There, in that way, it is much talked of but never seen.
Kuldan öte kuldan ziyade -- Beyond a man, more than a man.
O´nu düşün o´na sığın -- Meditate on it, take shelter in it.
O senden öte benden ziyade -- Beyond you, greater than me.
Bir sabah elbet güneş de doğacak penceremde -- One morning surely the sun will also rise in my window.
Ama bil ki ateşin hala yanacak yüreğimde -- But know that your fire still will burn in my heart.
Gözyaşlarım akıp gidecek -- My tears will pour out and go.
Selden öte selden ziyade -- Beyond a torrent, greater than a torrent.
Bir canım var vereceğim -- I have one life. I will give it.
Baldan öte baldan ziyade -- Beyond honey, greater than honey.
Orda öyle bir isim var ki -- There, in that way, it is much talked of but never seen
.
Kuldan öte kuldan ziyade -- Beyond a man, greater than a man.
O´nu düşün o´na sığın -- Meditate on it, take shelter in it.
O senden öte benden ziyade -- It is beyond you, greater than me.
Bir ben var ki benim içimde -- In my soul, there is one me.
Benden öte benden ziyade -- Beyond me, greater than me.
Bir sen var ki senin içinde -- In your soul, there is one you.
Senden öte senden ziyade -- Beyond you, greater than you.

Yeah normally you cant write "he" that way. And you cant use apostrophes. But as you mention "He" adresses to Allah and writing it "he" would be disrespect.

You should translate it literally. Because he says "there is such a name written in four books and he is beyond and greater than us". Four books are Torah, Psalter, Bible, Quran. You can see the name of God in them.

Well, at least I recognize what I´m having trouble with, even before I ask.

Çok teşekkür ederim, gokuyum!
