I have been set straight!!! A friend here has told me privately (perhaps to spare me embarrassment -- thank you, friend) that I am on the completely wrong path with this song. This friend pointed me to a posting on another site that tells the old story on which Barış based his lyrics. So, in this friend´s honor, I have tried to translate that posting. ... There are three things I don´t understand, though. The posting says the nomads in this story are high in the mountains of "orta Anadolu," which I take to mean the middle of Anatolia. But the two villages named -- Aşfar and Elmalı -- seem to be in Antalya province, which would put them on Turkey´s southwest coast, yes? Also, these two words stumped me: maya (which my friend points out may mean "camel") and dögünmek (I´m guessing, though, that this "g" should be a "ğ"). ... Here is my translation. I did it sort of quickly because I was so eager to learn the real story, so I´m sure there are mistakes. ... Tekrar teşekkür ederim, arkadaşım!
Barış manço´nun cok guzel yorumladigi nenni bebek acikli bir hikayeden geliyor. olay yaklasik 350-400 yil önce, orta anadolu’nun yüksek ve daglik bölgesinde yasayan avsar asiretlerinden birine ait. aslinda bir agit.
Barış Manço´s very nice interpretation of Nenni Bebek comes from a tragic story. An event about 350 to 400 years ago relates to someone from the Afşar nomadic tribes living in the high and mountainous region of middle Anadolu. In fact, it is a funeral song.
günlerden birgün bir asiret beyinin oglu ile baska bir asiret beyinin kizi evlenir. yedi sene çocuklari olmaz. asiret beyinin oglu bu evliligin, bu beraberligin mutluluk getirmedigini, buna gelinin neden oldugunu her firsatta gelinin basina kakar.
One day in this time the son of a tribal chieftain marries the daughter of another tribal chieftain. For seven years, they have no children. The tribal chieftain´s son at every opportunity puts in the bride´s head that this marriage, this union does not bring happiness, that the bride is the reason for this.
The fate is this: Finally the bride brings into the world a boy child. The tribe is very joyful. When the child is three months old, it is decided that the tribe will migrate to another place. The bride wraps her child in a rug, puts it to bed in a cradle and has it placed on top of a ???.
asiret bir gece yarisi elmali’dan yola çikar. elmali daginin sik ve karanlik ormanlari içinde yollarina devam ederlerken kötü bir tesadüf, çam dallarindan biri zavalli yavrunun besigine takilir ve onu mayadan ayirir. yavru, gecenin sessizligi içinde besigiyle çam dalina asili kalir.
One midnight the tribe sets out on the road from Elmalı. As they continue on the roads inside the dense and dark forests of the Elmalı mountains, one of the pine limbs gets snagged on the poor child´s cradle and it pulls it from the ???. The child remains hanging by its cradle to the pine branch in the silence of the night.
hiç bir seyden haberi olmayan kafile, ertesi sabah obaya gelip konaklar. emzirmek için yavrusunun yanina giden ana, yavrusunu bulamayinca çilgina döner. dögünmege, yolunmaga baslar. asiret büyük bir üzüntü içine gömülür. dayisi, amcasiyla birlikte geldikleri yoldan geriye dönerek yavruyu aramaya koyulurlar. fakat ne çare ki bulamazlar.
The caravan, not knowing anything at all, comes to a tribal camp the next morning and (settles in?). The mother, going to the child´s side to nurse it, becomes crazed when she cannot find the child. She starts to ??? and tear her hair. The tribe sinks into a great sadness. Turning backward along the road on which they came, together with all the uncles, they set about searching for the child. But there is no solution that they can find.

türkü, acinin ana gönlünde sekillenip, dilinden dökülen feryadidir.
Folk song, formed in a mother´s heart of suffering, a bellow pouring from her tongue.
